Hi bloggies, how's your Hump Day goin? Things have been bueno round this casa. I had some furniture delivered and oohh-yeah, it's lookin fly. I will have be posting pics of it tomorrow. Stay tuned...
Was yesterday a slow day in bloggie land for any of you? I was feelin' like maybe my dairy free softserve post from the previous day was a little lame or something, because I didn't have as many comments. Or maybe you're bored of it. It's just damn tasty, what can I say.
Never fear, I've got some new things to spice up your life...
Remember how I said I had been on a bit of a shop-a-thon? A few people wrote to me and wanted to see some of other loot.
From left to right we've got some cute little spoon holders or shallow dishes with silver beetles and patterns on them from West Elm. Then, a bowl, that I found from Bed Bath & Beyond but they only had 1 in stock. I need 3 more. I'm on their list and when they get more, they're supposed to call. And I've got some land to sell you, too. Does anyone ever get a call back from a store? Pul-eeze. Up front is a cheapie brown plastic plate that was on sale for 1.99 each from West Elm, I got 4. Perfect for my little monkey's grub.
Also while at BB & Beyond I picked up some silverware, an Oxo box grater, and a stack of chocolate leather coasters. All of this was at 20% savings because I hoard those BB & B coupons like it's the Great Depression.
Time to Make Coconut Milk Kefir
Hopefully, I don't need to tell you all about the benefits of kefir; that it's a fermented food and fermented foods are good for us because they replenish healthy bacteria in our guts which are depleted by stress, pollution, toxins, eating acid-promoting foods, alcohol, coffee, antibiotics, yadda yadda. We all know we should be ingesting probiotics or healthy bacteria every day, right? Ok, thought we're on the same page. So I won't belabor.
Most kefir recipes are ridiciulously laborious, boiling pots of hot water, milk that needs to be scalded, thermometers, you name it, total PITA. This recipe comes courtesy of my naturopath, and I won't even charge you a $200 an hour office visit for sharing it.
Ingredients:
1 liter of coconut water (I use about 2/3rds of it)
1 can of TJ's light coconut milk
1 packet of kefir starter.
Pour all 3 items into a glass or plastic jar; don't use metal because it will impede the bacteria's fermenting process
Close up of the starter I use. From Whole Foods, it's called Yogourmet. It's not the good ole fashioned kefir grains, and for all those vegans who are opposed to using a starter with a trace amount of dairy in it, then don't use this one.
You can get water kefir grains (which are inherently vegan) from a place like this
or from the Kefir Lady.
I use this starter and am fine with it. I'd rather have some kefir than none at all and the trace dairy in the starter is not an issue for me, but again, if it is for you, then order a starter suitable for your needs and preferences.
The coconut milk, water, and starter...
...And here's the mixture after sitting out, lightly covered, on your countertop for 18-24 hours.
I think it's genius that you don't have to do anything other than let the good bacteria get to their happy fermentation work. No boiling vats of milk required!
Give it a stir and pop it in the fridge if you like, and voila, it will last for a couple days in the fridge, but honestly, you won't have any trouble finishing it the first day because it's so good!
After coating my tum-tum with bacteria, I also coated it with plenty of raw veggies. Heavy dulse action on top of greens, along with tomatos, carrots, cukes & zukes, yellow & orange pepps.
Also, I put that trough to good use. This was a deep pit of roughage. Greens, B.S., tomatoes, carrots, yellow & orange pepps, cukes & zukes, dressed up in a happy bath of OJ, agave, and cracky blacky.
Deb also asked me if I eat lunch? I wouldn't call it lunch, I'd call it Chocolate Sun Warrior BRPP. Slurp, slurp....good, good. Lunch? It just depends, I kinda graze on this-n-that. I more or less eat my bulkier stuff in the a.m. and p.m. and midday is just kinda a slurp here a nibble there, kinda thing.
Speaking of Deb, she's got Sunbutter goin' on today. The actual Sunbutter brand. (I just stole your photo Deb but I'll never steal your SunnyB.)
In the past I've only bought TJ's Sunflower Seed Butter
Does anyone have experience with both and wanna gimme a quickie comparison? Flavor and thickness reports are what I am lookin' for. I realize Deb's got crunchy and I've got smooth so that's diff but what about taste? Anyone had both? Which do you prefer and why?
Now aren't you so happy about that kefir hookup that you could just flip? Upside down that is? I am. Yoga du jour is Sirsana, aka headstand.
:)

QuestionsWhen you comment on other people's blogs, do you check the Subscribe to Follow Up Comments box, or not? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but find if I don't, then I actually go back and check to see if the blogger wrote anything else in the comments section that may be interesting. The reason I don't always subscribe to follow-up comments is that some bloggers get dozens upon dozen of comments and it's not like I need each and every one of her comments coming to my inbox...what do you do?
P.S. There are 2 winners of the Zevia contest Bonnie & Margaret...ladies, please email me at loveveggiesandyoga@gmail.com by Wednesday night at 10pm Pacific or I am moving on and selecting other winners. I need to wrap that badboy contest up since I have another one that just started. Thanks chicas!

awesome recipe for the coconut kefir! I have never tried kefir before, but this looks really easy.
sometimes I check the comment thing if I've asked a question in my comment or if it's a really interesting topic.
ummmm can we go shopping sometime? I love those plates! What is it about cute dishware that makes food taste 10x's better?
I only follow up and check back for comments when I ask something importanteeee :)
That's it. So easy. Must make this soon. Thanks for sharing the recipe Averie. Much less involved than my oatgurt...although I think the coconut milk kefir would taste divine on top of oatgurt. :)
I love both Sun Butters, but I'm all about the crunch.
You and I = $hopping forces to be reckoned with :-D
Averie! You are too sweet! That is all.
Ok, that's not really all ;). Your coconut milk kefir sounds delish, and I looooove the fact that you bought dishes (I have way too many for my own good). You sound so much like me (or I sound so much like you). I know we'd be instant real-life friends!!
Love,
Katie
Janthea-hi and yea kefir at home saves tons of $. You don't have a TJ's, you poor thing. OMG, for the things I do get there, it's a godsend.
Brani-Thanks for sayin hi and give the kefir a whirl!
Jenny, VG, & Katie-Girls, I'd love to plan a shoppa-polaooza. An IRL blogger shop-a-thon! Seriously, it would be sooo fun, I know IRL we'd all be instant buds just like you said Katie. I wish seriously I could meet up with you all :)))
Heather-I wish I could meet up with you, too! And that I could watch your oat-gurt makin' in action. My kefir recipe is soooo easy and yeah, it'd go great on oatgurt or with some Jay or Sun W mixed up in it.
Love you all!! xoxo Averie :)
Ooooh I've been wanting to make my own coconut kefir! :) Thanks for the info! I bought the So Delicious one and it was deeeelicious! But homemade is always best!
Ugh, I miss yoga!!! My stomach is to painful right now for it. Soon though..soooon!
Thanks for not billing me $200 ;) That kefir looks awesome! I've actually never had it before.
I love, love, love those dishes!! They're so cute! As far as the comments go, I usually just check if I ask a question. Hope you had a great evening!
Thanks for the tips about coconut Kifer. Now, I just need to find the starter.
I don't check the comment thing very often.
Those dishes are SO CUTE!! I keep thinking I need to buy some new ones - they come out so well in pictures. I'm not bored by your posts or the softserve at all! I need to make some more...and yes - I've said that 5,000 times now.
If I'm reading a blog that doesn't get 50-100 comments then yes, I do subscribe. If I don't subscribe I often forget to go back and re-read the comments because I read so many different blogs regularly. I always subscribe to yours! :)
Hi Averie- thanks for the SB-shout outs! I've had both types and I think flavor is similar. I JUST bought that kefir starter, so excited to have a recipe that doesn't involve a thermometer.
I found that when I checked the box to see further comments, I'd get 100 which was just overload for my brain! So I just stopped. As Hayley said, if it's a smaller blog, sometimes I'll do it.
mmm sunflower butter is yummy! I don't subscribe to comments, so I feel like I miss out if the author writes back but I don't have time to read everyone's comments in my inbox either
seriously bb does send out coupons like mad. now I won't shop without one
I've ordered sun warrior protein powder and CAN NOT WAIT for it to arrive in the post :D :D Everything looks shiney new in your world right now :D
Thanks for the kefir how to...I may give it a go. I love kifir but done with the milk version.
sounds like your really getting settled in...love your new bowls and yeah...it was slow in Cyber ville these last few days..i've noticed too.

For those of you interested in real live Kefir grains, they are shared by many members of this list:

thanks for the coconut kefir recipe. I used to love kefir but since I cannot eat dairy plus became a vegan I missed it. I look forward in making this. How long will it last?
Hi Michelle-Thanks for checking out my blog...I have to say I am incredibly, incredibly envious that you're at 105 Degrees. What a dream come true....wow, enjoy it for us!
The Kefir will last 3 days or so in the fridge but really, you're not going to have a probably finishing it on the 2nd day, and if someone else has 1 glass, you're done :) I'd say the batch makes 4-5 glasses. Maybe like 6-8 oz each.
Guesstimate.
K- Glad you liked the dishes and you're welcome for not billing you :)
And to all the vegans who used to and/or miss dairy, the coconut milk path is the way to go, fa real!
Thanks for pointing me to this--sounds a lot better than cow dairy kefir or forking over $6 for the new Turtle Mountain coconut kefir! Well, unless it costs that much for you to buy the ingredients, that is, haha... Pretty simple! I think I can handle it, and I love the idea of incorporating fermented foods more often.
I notice you use Sun Warrior BR protein. I am in the market for some new brown rice protein powder (or some powdered deliciousness for smoothies, at least). Do you recommend SW? Chocolate over vanilla? I've had Jay Robb BR protein and liked it, but hear more raves about SW. Not a fan of buying 2.2 lbs of it for like $50 w/o trying first, though!
Hi Diana-Yeah making your own kefir is sooo much cheaper and actually easier. It's just 3 ingredients.
I was scared off of the Sun Warrior for years....$50 for a huge vat. What if I dont like it? Well, that was all for nothing b/c I love it. I like the Sun Warrior Vanilla best, then I'd say Jay Vanilla or Sun Chocolate are tied for 2nd, depends on my mood. Never had chocolate Jay. I did a blog about comparing them a few weeks back. I hear ya on wanting to sample the Sun W first. Sadly, I had to buy mine on blind faith but so happy I did. It is less fake stevia tasting than Jay I feel. But as with all protein powders, it's a bit of an acquired taste. Nothing like Vega's hemp though which I think is nast. LMK what you end up doin!
Good to know--thanks! You actually touched on the very thing that might sell me on SW. There is a definite prominence of stevia taste in the JR BR protein (which doesn't always agree with my body) and I would say that's my only (tiny) complaint. Sounds like I'd be safe with SW Vanilla.
Is there anything you can't make homemade? You rock!!!
i love yogurt :]
I make kombucha, ferment veggies in the summer and drink kefir almost daily! I think fermented foods do wonders for my immune system. I feel more clear headed when I consume them!
Great dishes!
I just got into kefir and really like it on my oats or made into a smoothie with frozen peaches, blueberries and agave. YUM! I also take a probiotic pill each day...
I love how humorous you are about all this - and sure, you're preaching to the choir here!
Personally, I would prefer to get the grains and have a continuous source of kefir - those packages run out, don't they?
Right now, I'm working at killing off yeasty beasties, so no point taking probiotics, but at the end of the cleanse I'll need all the probiotics I can get, and am looking forward to laying hands on some kefir to culture my nut mylks and cheeses!
Thanks again!
I take raw, fermented apple cider vinegar with Mother every day. I also drink Kombucha sometimes and take probiotic powder or capsules. And I sometimes get probiotics from organic yogurt.
oh yea! Thanks for letting me know about your kefir recipe. I must try it! I love the coconut Kefir as well. Perfecto!
