Raw Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls

How are you doing this Monday morning (or Sunday night for the night owls)?  So what went down over the weekend?  I need some stories!

Saturday I busted a hump around the house and went to a block party which was kinda lame.  Sunday I went to Victoria's Secret for some much needed necessities.  After having a baby and nursing for years, I really felt like I needed to buy some pretty things.  Girls, you know what I'm talking about when you just need to feel pretty.

I realize that VS may not be the height of quality or anything, but it sure was nice getting some items for The Girls.  I had not been in that store in years.  Yes, years.  I needed a Cliff's Notes on Bra-Buying because there were a million styles, lifts, shapings, paddings, you name it...But clue me in on your fave goodies from VS!

In addition to the lingerie, I picked up two body sprays.  Love my body sprays, chemicals and all.  They were just unpacking their Christmas merchandise, you know, before Halloween, and the red spray is a Creme Brulee, Vanilla, & Starfruit scent and the pink is Candy Baby, basically cotton candy in a bottle.  So I'm thinking between the lingerie and the body sprays, I'm pretty edible.   TMI, sorry.

But enough girl talk, and onto the grub!  I am really glad you enjoyed the Highlights of the Week post from yesterday.  Thanks for sharing what other languages you can speak or wish you could speak, too.  For anyone who's just getting up to speed, recently I decided to implement a Highlight Post that hits over the weekend recapping my previous week's eats-n-treats, because I've been told I'm hard to keep up with in the recipe department.  Check it out if you missed it!

And I also gave another version of my Kale Chip Recipe yesterday in the Highlights Reel, too.

But moving onto today...
Over the years there has been a particular recipe for Raw Chocolate Chip Cookies floating around.  The Sunny Raw Kitchen featured it ages ago, then I saw it pop up on the Raw Goddess' Blog.  Recently Angela did a Guest Post on Gina's Blog and posted her version there.

Don't get me wrong, those ladies made that particular recipe look awesome, but I am really picky about when, where, and how I use coconut or coconut oil and that version calls for it.   It tends to overpower all the other flavors and that's all I taste so I need to be careful about when I use it.  So, I knew I needed to create my own recipe sans coconut

And, it's one of my best recipes ever, and I will explain more on that in a bit, but first I present you with:

Averie's Raw Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls
2/3 c raw cashews
1/3 c oats
2 Tbsp Agave
1 Tbsp Maple Syrup (Omit and use Agave to preserve true Raw Status if you care)

1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
1/4 c Chocolate Chips (or to preserve true raw status, take 2 Tbsp Raw Cocoa Powder and add 1 Tbsp Agave, optional dash of vanilla extract, whisk and blendSpread into a thin layer on wax or parchment paper, freeze.  Take frozen chocolate off parchment and crumble the shreds into the mixture as your raw "chips".)
Recipe Yields: Approximately 17 Cookie Dough Balls

Take Oats & Cashews and get ready to Blend in your VitaCookieMaker

After you have your Oat-n-Cashew Flour...

...To it Add the Agave, Maple, & Vanilla Extract

Blend Again

Tip for Vita-Mix Users: You know you have "The Right Consistency" of Dough when the dough starts to ball up like a tennis ball and bangs around from side to side in the canister.  I have learned this through trial and error and wanted to pass along my wisdom.  Once you see The Ball (what I am talking about is in the above photo) start whipping around, Stop Blending You have reached Perfect Dough Consistency Status.

Add the Chocolate Chips (or the Raw Chocolate Chips like I told you how to make)

Either Stir them in By Hand, of a 5 Second Blend in the VitaCookie (or Food Processor)

Transfer Dough Blob to plate or working surface.  Tip: If for some reason your dough was too sticky, gummy, runny, or unworkable, refrigerate for a half hour and you should be back in business.

Roll Into Cute Raw Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls.  I yielded 17 Balls from this Recipe.  Clearly, not an exact science but that's what I got.

The Pretty Raw Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls

Pretty is nice.  But they are freakin' amazing.  I am not just saying that, either.

Optional Tweaks:
Add a dusting of cocoa powder, carob powder, or powdered sugar to the finished balls
Roll in raw cocoa nibs or shredded coconut
Rather than adding in chocolate chips, add raisins instead and add a dash of cinnamon to the batter for Oatmeal-Cinnamon-Raisin Raw Cookie Dough Balls
Flatten or mold into larger cookie shapes
Dehydrate for a more "cooked tasting" version of a chocolate chip cookie.  But gawd I love the raw dough taste so this is out for me!

Now I wanted to touch on about why this may be one of my best dessert recipes ever!  For me, a recipe has to encompass many things if I am going to actually make it and then continue making it as it becomes a go-to favorite.

Some of those recipe elements include:
1. Easy.  The less steps the better.
2. Time Involved.  If I cannot make the entire thing from walking into my pantry to grab the dry goods to the last dish is dried and put away 30 minutes later then I am probably not going to make it.  I have a life outside of the kitch, too.
3. One appliance.  For me, this is my VitaGod.  For you, it may be your food processor.  Dehydrated food is lovely, but it can be a lonnnnng wait and too much advance planning.  And also the amount of dishes involved factors in here too.  If you need a whisk, spoon, spatula, mixer beaters, Vita canisters, dehydrator screens, 7 bowls, forget itOne Appliance Please.
4. Very simple and short ingredient list.  Nothing exotic.  Nothing too expensive.
5. Taste.  Must be excellent and if it's a raw approximation of Something Else, it's gotta taste like the Something Else it's trying to be otherwise why bother.  Just eat the Something Else or skip it entirely.  Unless I can make a raw approximation that is spot-on in the flavor department, I'd rather just not have it.

These Raw Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls have all of items 1 through 5.  And using the above as my criteria, the cookie dough balls are in company with these other Raw Vegan Desserts I have created that also encompass items 1 through 5:

Wow.

I'm totally a coconut type person. I love shredded coconut (sweet and unsweet) and I can eat the coconut oil straight off the spoon - yep, I'm a little weird. LOL

When I make time to make those raw cookie dough balls, I'm going to try yours for sure! I know I'll try 'em with coconut oil, too, but yours look YUM!!!

As for Vegan, I could never be a "true Vegan" 'cause I really have no desire to live the rest of my life without a little honey once in a while or an organic, farm fresh egg (from my well cared for chickens) just once in a while.

But that's me.

Hmmm... That gets me to thinkin'...

I wonder what is that "deal breaker" for Vegans. Do you miss honey or eggs or anything "non-Vegan" Averie? Or anyone else?

I've actually been a 100% Raw Vegan in the past but couldn't keep it up.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. :-D

Great post, Averie - as always!!

And I know what you mean... sometimes those "chemicals" smell soooooooooooooo good! ;-)

Hugs,
Michele

You can't even wait until I'm done with my Raw Vegan Coconut Snowballs before you go and out do yourself, huh? Now I'm going to have to make these too, and it's all I'm ever going to want to eat! Maybe I can just re-work my diet to include 50-60% desserts, then we won't have a problem.
Regardless, I know what I'm making next!!!
Can't wait to try them, and luckily, I'm sure it won't be long before my snowballs have all disappeared!
P.S. I love VS too. They have a strapless bra that I'm obsessed with. I want to get another, but they are $50! Luckily, I get their coupons in the mail, so sometimes you can get a good deal!
Hope you had a great weekend!!!

I agree on the coconut issue, the oil really does overpower everything!
Wicked purchases from VS. How can they make those artificial sprays smell SO good??
I was wondering if you've ever hurt yourself doing yoga? My lower back often hurts after yoga.

I'm glad you got VS goodies :) You so deserve them!

Do you think this would work with regular flour? Can't hurt to try I guess...

Holy potatoes! I actually want to make these right now..
but my room mate is sleeping, and it'd be rude to wake her with my magic bullet grinding away.

dang . because I really want those raw cookie balls right now!
I will make them with almonds...as I am sans cashews.
oh well :)

LOVE your body sprays.. I am a body spray-aholic as well.. well.. more so scented-body-lotion aholic.. I have tons! and always seem to collect more and more.
I also use coconut oil for body butter :D

My weekend plans were non to exciting.. but I did drink red wine and wear a black bobbed wig.

Update - YES, it works with regular whole wheat flour. I just made flour+maple+water (just a few drops) and Bobby and my dad (!!) can't get enough of it. I'm eating them right now.

Okay, it is official - you are the best raw dessert maker OF ALL TIME! Every single day it seems like you come up with yet another amazing, delicious raw treat that I JUST HAVE TO MAKE. Seriously, my list of "Averie Desserts" I have to make it at least a mile long!

I have a lot of accomplishments I am proud of but becoming a vegan would definitely be at the top of the list! PhD student, awesome doggy/horsey/kitty momma, being an honest, genuine, no holds barred kind of woman tickles me too! Oh, and being the most ferocious ass kicking feminist ever! That always makes me smile.

Lovely post, as always! Your blog has so quickly become one of my favorites.

I love coconut so much, but your cookie balls look great, too. I have wanted to try these ever since Ange posted them.

And I can't believe VS has out Christmas stuff already. I haven't been there in a few weeks. But I LOVE Christmas and can't wait to start listening to Christmas music!! :)

Holy....those look amazing. I must make. Although, I don't have any chocolate chips on hand.

It's funny how there are so many coincidences out there. To make sure I'd be able to complete all my posts for Vegan Mofo, I finished up all my projects and outlines for posts in advance. One of them calls for the same cashew/oat flour method. I think I have it designated to post on Thursday (there I go giving out my secrets).

Speaking of secrets, I don't go to Victoria Secret much anymore, except for the bottoms and the sweats. They don't carry my size bra (especially now that I'm breastfeeding). I've always had trouble finding a big enough cup with a small enough band width. Instead, I usually wear DKNY or Elle MacPherson bras.

Whoa...those look exactly like the transfatty buttery version I used to scoop out of a tub when I was little, but a million times better.
Can't wait to try these!!!

I love the idea of the frozen home made chocolate chips. It all looks great. Good tip about the tennis ball rolling around.

Have you decided you love your v-god more than your blend-tec?

Have a great week!

I LOVE VS! I could buy the whole store. My fav bra is the BioFit. I have at least 4 colors.

Averie! You are too much! I cannot handle these fan-freaking-tastic raw cookie dough balls! Chocolate chip cookie dough is my ultimate favorite thing. I hope my regular ol blender can handle making these, cuz Snackie needs a solid upcoming b-day treat!

I adore the VS goodies! I rarely buy new bras, but I still like to peruse the store. The pink makes me high. And I am not hatin on their rolling out the Christmas scents! My fave time of the year!

Uhh, I don't know if there's anything I'd really brag about here. My grades? haha.

Hope you have a fabulous start to the week! xoxo

Oh, Averie, you are going to fall in LOOOOOVE with the dark chocolate powder, I’m betting. I use it all the time. And yup, you guessed it: I don’t go back to regular anymore. Convert for life ;).

I know I’m weird, but I actually really love the taste of the A-grass chocolate powder. It’s so bitter and yet chocolatey at the same time… odd but yummy. I know others, like Heather, hate it, so I can’t tell ya how you’d like it in the ice cream except to say that if your tastebuds are like mine, you’ll love it too :) :). Yeah, it tastes different, but not worse than if I just used all cocoa.

P.S. I just scheduled a post (for November) for homemade cookie dough lara-type bites/bars (Cookie Dough Babies), but I love YOUR idea for using actual oats to make bites that are even more cookie dough-like.

P.P.S. Fudge Babies going in the mail. Can you send your addy again? I am a scatterbrain and misplaced it.

Love ya!

I REALLY need to make those raw cookie dough balls!

Averie, sweet girl, I am so sorry that I have not uploaded the recipe for those cookies yet. I have had some (good) personal stuff come up that has recently just been sucking up my time! It's on the top of my "blog to do list" though. :)

Have a wonderful week, friend!

Ok, these are being made TONIGHT! I love raw cookie dough, so I imagine these will have a special place my heart/belly.

As for the vicky's products, I tend to not fit into many of their garments. I feel like I look silly since I don't fill them up! :)

I just made a couple trays of your cookies and popped them in the Excalibur...I tweaked the recipe a lot (was already a great recipe but I can't help but tweak) and I scraped a vanilla bean in there too...all the kids are loitering around the dehydrator waiting for COOKIES! Thanks for the inspiration, we need some cookies on this Monday morning!

Good for you for indulging in some girly-things :)

Have a gorgeous day!

I need to go to V.S. I use one scent from their body sprays, and one scent only.. and people know me for "this scent". but last time, they didn't have it! I don't know what I'm gonna do.

Can you use a different nut for the cookie dough? I don't have cashews at the moment, and I want to make these asap! :)

My VS faves are the all lace Emma bra collection, front close, stretch lace, supportive, yet giving. Also love their "Love Spell" fragrance, sort of a cross between rose and peach. I've never smelled anything else like it.

My but don't those cookie dough bites look just fabulous. I totally won an ice cream maker from Shannon today so how about I do some raw vegan chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream ASAP!

VS is a good one stop shop for mass panty purchases but I tend to limit bra buying to their sales. I'd rather shell out top(less) dollar for a higher quality boobie sling, ya heard?

WOW...that is an incredible yoga pose!! As weird as this may sound it looks incredibly comfortable!

I am probably the only person in the US who doesn't like chocolate chip cookies (raw or not) but I think those balls would taste great with or without the chips (TWSS?)

I really do love your re-caps because it reminds me of everything I still want to make. There's a part of me that's worried about making a dessert right now because I'm either not eating or scarfing everything in site. Lord knows I scarfed those coconut balls and the peanut butter balls you sent me straight away! Boy did they go down well though. :)

Thanks for your nice emails Averie...you are much appreciated.

I love your parameters for what makes a good recipe... "easy" and "taste" are important for me, too!

Those cookie dough balls look fabulous... I'm sure I've said that before... but really, what is better than cookie dough?! Especially when it won't give you salmonella!

Thanks for your sweet comment and neverending support, lady.

Friggin AMAZING. I don't have the Internet at home and couldn't remember exactly how you made yours, so I threw together 1/2 c. cashews, 1/4 c. almonds, 1 T. raw cacao powder, a splash of vanilla, a dash of salt, and about 1/2 c. of dates and dried cherries that had been sitting all lonely in a Ziplock in the pantry. Then I added about 1/4 cup each maple syrup and agave. I'll tell you what, this is one thing I should never make at night! It is like chocolate cherry cookie dough BLISS. I licked every last remnant out of the food processor in an attempt to satisfy myself so I wouldn't start noshing on dough balls before bed.

Did some experiments with this recipe (had to adapt, didn't have Agave in the house)

since I didn't have Agave in the house, I used Dates (4-6 dates make a good substitute) Blended separately after the oats and cashews before adding in the more fluid ingredients.

Also added 2 Tbsp Frangelico Liqueur (hazel nut based)

can't get enough of these...
