Vegan 4-Ingredient Homemade Hummus

How are you doing today?  Well, Monday's done, only 4 more days til the weekend.  Not that I'm counting or anything.  I am really glad you enjoyed the Vegan Peanut Butter Banana Bread (Gluten/Soy-Free) Recipe I posted!  It is sooo rich and moist that it didn't last long around here!  Thanks to new readers and faithful friends alike for showing the loveI really appreciate all the kind words and your great comments! Muah!!!!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts if you make it!

One cool thing that happened Monday at the DMV (and I am not talking about the 90 minute wait while trying to entertain my 2 yr old..yikes!) is that the license plate that I was randomly given starts with AH.  For those of you who've been following my legal name change to Averie Harmony, I had to mention the awesome serendipity of getting an plate with my first two initials as the first two letters.

But moving along to the eats.... I figured since there are so many hummus addicts out there, I'd show you how I make my own in 45 seconds with 4 ingredients.  I will say, I personally don't consume tons of hummus because the beans and I don't get along super well, but it's a fast, easy, and delish recipe to whip up.  Especially for guests who are very impressed "you can make your own hummus!"

Averie's Vegan 4-Ingredient Hummus
1 Can Garbanzo Beans (Drained about 80% of the way.  You can of course boil and make your own beans but I frankly don't have the time or desire and for 99 cents, I use TJ's organic garbanzos, happily)
3/4 of a Tsp of Salt (increase to taste if needed)
Juice of half a lemon (1-2 Tbsp)
3-4 Tbsp EVOO (Note: Some people would say add the EVOO at the end and drizzle in.  Lovely thought, but doesn't work so well in a Vita unless you wanna run the risk of hummus explosion.  And I don't, so I just add the EVOO with everything else all at once and I have no complaints)

Combine everything into your VitaHummus or Food Processor and Blend.  You're done!  But you can always pimp up your hummus with...

...The Extra's or the Optional's (add some, none, or a combo)

2 Tbsp Tahini (or 1/4 c sesame seeds)
1/4 c diced bell peppers (I added red to this recipe)
1/4 c diced zucchini (I added zukes to this recipe)
1/4 c cucumber
Garlic to taste
Onion to taste
Chipotle Seasoning to taste
Mrs. Dash Grill Seasonings or Seasoning Blends work amazingly well in homemade hummus.  The right "flavors" are already pre-mixed and there's no extra sodium.  I would use 1 Tbsp of whatever Seaonsing Blend you choose.  Mrs. Dash Chipotle Blend is really good and this is a case where I don't sweat the non-organic status.

For this hummus blend, I added 1/4 c of red pepper and 1/4 c of zukes

A quick blend later and I was in veggie-hummus heaven.  You can see the colorful veggie flecks.  I like a little color and texture to my hummus for sure.

I put it in a container for the fridgey.  And a bonus is that I put the price tag of the large container this recipe makes at about $1.25
99 cents for the organic garbanzo's from TJ's and the 1/2 of lemon at 25 cents.  So there ya have it...a money saver for all you hummus heads, too!

And you know what this hummus is really good on?  Those Raw Vegan Kale Chips I make!

Yummm.

The hummus made a nice side to go with the bowl of Brussels's Sprouts, Cauli, and Red Pepps dressed with the juice of 1/2 orange, agave, and cracky blacky that I munched for din-din.

I also wanted to give a shout to Me & Gogi.  If you haven't heard about them, the deal is that you can customize your own cereal and granola mix on their site.  It's pretty awesome stuff and the taste rocks!  I love that I could choose a Wheat-Free mix which is really important for me.

I even named my mix "Averie's Chocolate & Fruit Granola" & the site automatically kicks out nutritional info based on what I used, too.

Handpacked just for me.

Has anyone else tried Me&Gogi yet?  I just love the whole concept and needless to say uber-fresh because it's all custom made.

Things today were brought to you in VeganMofo spirit.

Tip of the Day: Remember that Vega Stuff that I reviewed last week in my monster Product Reviews Post?  Well Matt's Giving Some Away, check it out!

What are your plans for the Halloween season?  Any raucous and debauchery-laden parties you're going to?  Dressing up or not?  Pigging out on indulging in any candy?  I will most definitely be indulging in plenty of dark chocolate and I have Skylar all set up to be a pink fairy princess but no parties lined up for me to attend, yet.  Tell me what you're up to now that the season is drawing closer!

Hello gorgeous! Can I get three cheers for hummus!?!?! YAY!

It really is the best stuff, isn't it? And even though I live in the home of good hummus, I always make it myself. And I never veer from my standard basic recipe: chickpeas, olive oil, a tiny splash of water, salt, GARLIC, lemon juice and tahini. Gotta have that tahini!

I just finished the bowl I made yesterday....think it's time to make some more!

As for Halloween, PAWS, an animal charity I volunteer with is having a big halloween bash so I will be helping set that up. Fun! Still not sure what my costume will be, though...

P.s. I promised myself I would do this (my last post says why):

4 levels of biological diversity:
-species diversity
-functional diversity
-genetic diversity
-ecological diversity

The Morphological Species Concept:
-differences in size, shape, or other morphological characteristics
-based on physiological
-APPEARANCE.

That granola deal is the COOLEST thing I have ever heard of!!

I am going on a weekend get away the weekend of halloween. My 40th B-day is coming up and I asked to go stay at my ND's Bed and Breakfast. So, no real halloween plans:)

I got super stoked when I saw your title this morn.. LOVE ME some hummus. I cant count the number of times Ive tried to make it myself and it turned out crappy. I shall give this one a try!!

OMG brussles too.. super yum.

As for Halloween... not plans yet. Our townhouse complex is having a progressive dinner where one couple hosts appetizers, then you move on to someone else who has entrees, then to someone else's house for dessert etc. Not sure if we are taking part but its an option. I am not a fan of dressing up, though, so Im hoping thats not a requirement!!! (YOU MUST post pics of your little one)

Have as super day, Averie. :)

I've gotta check out that Me and Goji stuff. I'm such a sucker for customize products. You could probably make something like that at home, using the cereal box template on the Mr. Breakfast site.

As for Halloween, I'm into the dark chocolate, too. I love the Endangered Species squares.

Guess what?! My raw cupcakes made the "Cupcakes Take the Cake" blog again. I first heard about their blog when they appeared on Martha Stewart.

You should have named yourself Averie "Sunshine" because you are a sunny gal :)

There's so much yumminess here, but my eyes kind of glazed over after the hummus. LOVE.

The boy and I come from different religious backgrounds, so we've been flirting with the idea of making Halloween "the big holiday" for us to iron out that wrinkle. We'll still celebrate the others, but this will be the main event. Theoretically.

Yum! I am a hummus addict.
I add a small teaspoon of cumin when I make it - I'm surprised it's not even in your list of extras as I thought it was essential!
