Thanksgiving: Gratitude

Happy Thanksgiving, Friends!!!!!!!!!!!  I want to wish everyone a sincerely wonderful Thanksgiving Day, and a wonderful kickoff to the winter holiday season.  I want to take this time to thank each and every person who reads my blog, who leaves me positive & uplifting comments, who tells me that my blog has helped change them for the better, and thank you to all of you who write me telling me that you love my recipes and that I am helping you transform your dietary choices and your life.
Such high praise, and thank you, sincerely.  Without all of you who read my blog, I wouldn't have a blog.  So thank you, and I am grateful for you all!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to write a list of some things I am grateful for on this holiday and I will get to that, but first...

I'm glad you enjoyed my Everyday Eats post yesterday.  Keeping things simple the day before the big cooking & eating fest was the name of the game.  Foods like overnight soaked oats

Green Salads

And Kale Salads with Fresh Veggies for dinners were where it was at.

And either Raw Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Or Raw Vegan Almond Butter Cookies for dessert

All these foods comprise the simple, easy, pleasurable, stress-free way of eating I like best.  Not just the day before Thanksgiving, but in general, easy, simple, fresh, short ingredient lists, straightforward recipes, home-made, but not kitchen-enslaved, foods are how I like to cook and eat.

For Thanksgiving, I made a turkey for Scott.  He's not vegan, but 95% of the time goes along with my vegan fare.  He requests very little culinary-speaking but did request turkey, so I wanted to honor that request and I made one.  It was a very conscious choice, not just mindless eating nor embarked upon on whim.  I made a small bone-in turkey breast. (It was not appetizing for me to handle the raw bird, but I cloth-diapered Skylar so there is very little that makes me squirm anymore.  Sorry, about the TMI).

I also made Gravy, Stuffing, Sweet Potato Fries, Baked White Potatoes, Salads, and Dessert.  We had enough food.  No worries there.  And I will post pics of everything in the next day.  For now, I am trying to keep this post really simple because not gonna lie, I did bust a hump in the kitch today and don't have it in me to get all the pics up now.  Tomorrow, they'll be up, promise.

Here are some of the things I am grateful for:
My Husband
My Daughter
Being a homeowner
Having a body that I can use to do yoga, run, dance, walk, and move freely about the world
My yoga practice
Being hired to teach yoga
My blog
My blog readers
Finding the path that's right for me in terms of dietary choices
Friends I've made in the blogosphere
Friends from my childhood
Having plenty of "stuff"
Not having to worry about how to pay the electric bill or pay for groceries
Being able to take vacations with my family
Learning & being able to cook in a whole new way after food intolerances
Being appreciated by my readers
Living in a warm climate
My brain
My creativity
My sensitivity
Meaningful connection with others
Blue skies
Sunshine
Clean Water
Clean Food
The People Who Love Me

I could go on and on and on about what I am grateful for but my Tip of the Day is to Practice Gratitude.  Be grateful for that which you do have, focus on that.  Do not dwell or obsess on that which you don't.  It serves no purpose and will hinder you from seeing, feeling, observing, and being grateful for all that you do have.

Yoga today is full backbend, Urdhva Dhanurasana.  Open your heart center and let the love flow in.  Let yourself receive healing energy, peaceful vibes, and love from the Universe.  And then give back.  Be grateful.  Be giving.  Be loving.  Be Thankful.  Namaste Friends!

I think everyone 'round the Blogosphere has been asking What are you Grateful For?  And I will ask you now, too.  Tell me something you're grateful for.  Do you have an easy time practicing gratitude or do you find yourself dwelling on things you don't have or things you wish you had?  I think we'd be lying to ourselves if we said, oh, it's always easy and I never compare, I never have a hard time just accepting that which I have and not wishing for something else.  How do you get past this?  It's so important to realize we're only human, take a quick minute for your pity party, but then get back on track with a positive mental attitude, being grateful, and welcoming in the love and light that surrounds us.  That's my strategy at least, tell me about yours.

Amazing post Averie! I find that I have an easy time finding and practicing gratitude. I have always been extremely grateful for what I've been given and try to be mindful of that each day. I just wrote my last post on this and it's very similar to this. Thank you for the reminder and the wonderfully written words!

Happy thanksgiving, Averie! I think that's amazing you made a turkey for your husband even though you're vegan. That's so considerate and honorable of you! I love your thankful list, too. I'm thankful for family, friends, the opportunity to visit them, my healthcare plan, and the chance to pursue an education I am passionate about. And the blogging world! :)

Awesome gratitude post! I'm grateful for many of the same things you are.

And I'm grateful that I'm old enough to know myself.

But every day things come into sharper focus (even as my eyes start to go). For example, through blogging I've really come to realize that I am outwardly motivated, not inwardly motivated. That's why I love school and work because I'm constantly being motivated and encouraged by others.

So today, in my yoga class which I would NEVER have done on Thanksgiving Day EVER if I weren't so inspired by others, I thought of you and HEAB...and my friend Sally who, little did I know, was at her own yoga class this morning.

I am grateful for that insight about myself and for people like you who encourage us all to be better people.

:)

What a beautiful post Averie! I just love how you put your husband first today and was fine with making him a turkey. You obviously have a understanding, loving relationship, and I am so happy for you! :)

I'm simply grateful for each any every day I wake up healthy and in charge of my life. I truly feel like I can do anything my heart desires, and that feeling is irreplaceable.

Happy Thanksgiving, Averie! I am so thankful for my family, my boyfriend, and my adorable pets. They all make me so happy. :)
I always try to remember to not compare myself to others, but it can be difficult at times. I'm sure each and everyone one of us has something to be grateful for, and we should all remember that!

I like your last paragraph - I had a similar reflection on my latest post - when you find yourself reflecting on the things you don't have or the "not enoughs" , stop and ask yourself "How is this attitude stopping me from enjoying the things I already have?". We can't appreciate the good fortune we DO have if we are constantly searching outside of ourselves for more and more. Namaste.

Bautiful, beautiful post! I loved every gratitude-infused word. You make so much sense, you wise wise yogi :) Love your tips of the day.

Today I am grateful for...your raw vegan chocolate chip cookie dough. Oh yes I am! Made a batch of your cookie dough balls today (made 5 dozen...a big batch of balls! TWSS) for afternoon tea and we practically inhaled them. I am also grateful for non-cookie-dough things like hubby and 5 kiddos and a wonderful happy home and life :)

Thanks for putting such a fantastic, inspiring, groovy blog out here for all of us to enjoy and learn from. And thanks for the raw chocolate chip cookie dough recipe :)

XO!

Oh I am so grateful for so many things. Actually, the fact that I can realize that and appreciate it every day is a great thing to be grateful for. I've always known that I was luckier than most people on earth. I have always had clean water, lots of food, a roof over my head, healthy friends and family, my own health, a great education and plenty of extra stuff to make me smile. Many people in this world can't say the same thing. When I feel grumpy about not being able to afford some frivolous object, I remind myself that there are people who can't even afford necessities. So I shut up, stop whining and remember that life is good!

Averie I am so sorry this is a day late - yesterday was insane and I didn't get much computer time (to myself!!) I want you to know that your comment on my blog made me smile from ear to ear. Words cannot express how truly thankful I am to have you in my life. I admire you so much - your honesty, your peace with the world and your body, your values and how firmly you stand by them, your beauty (both on the inside and out) and all of the advice, support and love you've brought to our friendship. I truly feel as though I've found someone I could be friends for life with, despite the fact that we've never met.

Thank you Averie and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Great post, Averie:) Happy Thanksgiving! That's so nice to think of your husband for Thanksgiving and making him a turkey.

I am thankful for my family, my husband, my home, my finances, my job, my dog, and so much more.

Awww!! I love your everyday eats!!!

Loved reading what you are thankful for too!! After learning about water scarcity in Environmental Science, I definitely realized how much more grateful I should be for those simple things in life. I cant imagine having to go thirsty somedays!! We watched a movie about it and it was SO eye-opening.

So cool that you had a blogger meet-up the other day as well!! They are so much funnnn.

I think I could look at your raw cookie dough everyday.........eat it too, but that's another story.

HUGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

it's such a blessing to know such a compassionate and loving person. Your posts always make me feel warm and comforting (sounds silly, but 'tis true!) I hope you had an incredibly Thanksgiving, you deserve no less!

I am grateful for the generic things: my family, gingie, friends, my body and it's capacity to move and embrace the ones I love :) and of course, the blogging community!

Love you honey!

I am definitely grateful for all the wonderful people I've got to know through blogger. I truly believe my life is now richer because of it :)

How long have you not been eating meat for? I only just started eating meat again after going veggie when I was 14, so I never learned how to cook meat! Up until recently I could only cook chicken breast on my george foreman grill :P I'm impressed you could cook up turkey for the husband.

I am so thankful for timing, and bad situations that turn into good ones. Like the circumstances in which I found the blog world! :) Yahoooo for that.

Aw I love your list Averie- we have so much to be thankful for! Hope you had a great day! :)

Thank you Averie! Your blog has really helped me keep my Raw life interesting : )

I know how important practicing gratitude is and thanks for the reminder : ) I do tend to dwell on what I don't have but have to remind myself at the end of every day how much I DO have.

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Love your gratitude list. Reads kinda similar to mine actually. minus the yoga teacher, daughter and food intolerances parts :-)

Sure, I am incredibly grateful for the bounty I have in my life on so many levels. But then I'll have a pity party for those last 5-10 pounds I want to shake, then I get back to feeling fortunate again. Goes in cycles. It's my life!
