Coffee in Aruba

How are you doing?  Greetings from a warm and sunny place!  I'm actually in Aruba.  And let me tell you, if you forget your memory stick card reader in order to import photos from your digital camera into your antiquated Sony Vaio laptop, and you're running on some rickety barely-better-than dial-up-kind-of-DSL-lines, blogging can be a real beast.  (Insert many other words that start with B, too.)  So let's just get to the pics, what do you say?  But before I do, many, many thanks to Heather for her Guest Post.  If anyone missed it, check it outWe're a couple of Crows.

My day started off perfectly.  I went for a quick couple mile run, did a little bit of yoga, and it was time to run some errands.  But first, I had to snap a couple pics of Skylar.

She was so happy she was dancing!  With some St. Patrick's Day Parade Beads that have gone from San Diego to Phoenix to Aruba.  And we haven't lost them yet.

Then I went in search of coffee.  Ohhh, cool, an coffee bar called Espresso.  Guess what, they open at 7PMMakes perfect sense.

So the search for coffee continued.  I found this little kiosk.  Cool until I realized that their to-go-cup was the size of a Dixie Cup.

That was a no goSkylar's expression here summed up my feelings about the coffee search:

But then, I found this quaint little cafe.  Perfect.

Until I paid for the coffee.  $6 Dollars.  Six American Dollars for 1 styrofoam cup of coffee.   "But we use really good beans" the barista said.  I'm thinking, I can buy a half pound of really good beans for 6 bucks, but addicts don't complain.  They just pay up.

Addicts just get in our cars and get ready for our errands and the rest of the day.

So off I went to the supermarket.  And see utter mayhem.  Grocery stores are closed on the weekends here so Monday morning at the Grocery store is like Friday afternoon at the bank with everyone cashing their paychecks:  Pandemonium!
Good thing I ran right into this Moet display.  Gosh how I adore Rose Champagne.

But since I was still nursing my coffee, I passed on the champagne.

But what I overpaid for in coffee, I made up for in bowls.  50 cents each!  That's right 2 porcelain bowls for a buck.  Love it.

Will be perfect to eat my Hugh Jass'es in

Yoga Today is Janu Shirsana A (Head to Knee Forward Bend).  When you're doing this pose, you should have a very slight twisting of your core to be over your extended leg.

I bought maranatha pb chips for 6.79! And then two days later with sales and coupon I could have gotten them from whole foods for 3 dollars. Oh well, I supported a small local store so I don't feel awful.
Enjoy Aruba! What's vacation if not getting robbed on prices?
And no worries on the TRUwhip, it's a coupon

OMG, I would have never guessed ARUBA!!! How amazing! :)

I SOOOOO understand your dial-up frustrations. I live in the middle of the woods in the middle of nowhere and had to deal with dial-up myself until just LAST YEAR! Yes, I was a tortured soul. And, YES, it SUCKS! I totally appreciate you dealing with the ancient technology to give us an update!

Oh yes, the glorious coffee! I think I would give my own arm if it came down to it and needed a coffee rush. ;)

Keep enjoying your wonderful vacation!

xxoo

Well, I must say, I appreciate you putting up with the blogging beast because I'm living vicariously through you on your vaca!!

Oh me, oh my! I feel so bad about that coffee situation! I'd be crying buckets of tears if I were in that position. Us addicts HAVE to have it! Keep having a blast in paradise!!

Thank you again for the super sweet Christmas card - you have such a beautiful family!

Aruba?!?!?! How cool is that!

Gotta love the Rockhouse in Negril for their bottomless cups of Bluemountain coffee. Baha, probably my fave part of that trip. But I'm assuming the 6 dollar coffee man was right when they said they have really good beans- I mean, you'd think anywhere in freaking Aruba has good coffee! Hahaha the addict pays up. Too true.

You guys look like you're having a blast!

I've definitely overpaid for coffee too, and I think that I'm overpaying for the apartment I'm renting - counting down the days until the lease is up! :)

I am so jealous! Aruba is so fun :) Have a wonderful time while your there and get some sun. Also - good luck with your coffee hunt tomorrow morning!

Today I overpaid for something....a portable media tablet for my husband. Just a month ago it was $100 less but apparently it's a huge hot ticket item for Christmas this year. My husband REALLY wants one of these, so yep, I got it. If they drop the price tomorrow or the next day, I'm going to kick Amazon's butt...HARD!

AVERIE! Jealous doesn't even begin to describe how I feel! I hope Skylar gets to feeling better VERY soon! Like, yesterday would probably be good.

$6 for coffee!! that must have been some fabulous coffee! ha. Although I so would have done the same thing, I cant deal without my morning coffee. Its worth it. Looks like an awesome trip so far. Enjoy it! Looks like paradise=)

Hope you are having a great time in Aruba! I have paid up to 5 bucks for a cup of coffee while on vacation, but sometimes it's just worth it. I hope your "really good beans" were yummy and worth it too!

Skylar is such a cutie by the way. Have fun in the tropics. :)

Hey Averie! I've been reading your blog for a while now, but this is my first time commenting :) just wanted to let you know I made and LOVED your sugar cookie dough balls. The whole family gobbled them up. I look forward to trying out more of your recipes!

Raw Goddess said...

Aruba?! Wow, must be wonderful! How long are you there?! Enjoy every moment!

Anna said...

Go for it; I am totally ok with those pics on your blog. And I definitely agree with you; its the best when you can make something unprocessed and healthy that goes over well with the whole fam. Instead of telling people how to clean up their eating habits, it is so much more effective (and FUN!) to show them with delicious food. Like one time I made a raw kale salad and my parents loved it as well, but I knew if I first told them I was making a salad with raw kale and I wanted them to eat it bc its good for them, they wouldn't, but I didn't say a thing except "try this really good meal I made for you" and they did and LOVED it!

Susan said...

Both you and Skylar are adorable in this post!! I don't blame you for going on such a lengthy quest for coffee. Was the one you got actually reeeally good beans? :P

I paid $3 for a protein bar today. I forgot my snack at home at there's a GNC next to Starbucks. I could have had half an Aruban coffee for that!!! :P

lafillenaturelle said...

Hi Averie, I totally think you should listen to "Cocomo" by the Beach Boys. It'll enhance your Aruba experience. :)

I've overpaid for sooo many things, and every time with PANGS of guilt! The one thing that comes to mind (I did this recently) was buying Stride spearmint gum from my school's caf when I should have bought it in the 3-pack at my grocery store. OK it sounds like a small deal but the difference could have bought me a bunch of kale. And THAT is a big deal.

*Naomi* said...

enjoy your time down there! did you bring lots of your own food or do they have healthy, vegan, eats down there?? I have never been to aruba! I have heard its beautiful and Skylar is SO ready for the beach and some sun!

LOL the coffee shop that opens at 7pm, I laughed bc I am JUST like you when it comes to coffee, if it was 6 bucks well then thats what I would pay if it was the only kind, I need the stuff it just runs through my veins!

cant wait to hear more about your Arubian Adventures!

Hayley said...

I'm so happy to read a post from you in Aruba! The weather looks absolutely beautiful...please send some of those sunny blue skies our way!

You have the most beautiful smile, Averie. You just glow when you smile...now I see where Skylar gets it from.

I can't think of something I've overpayed for recently, but I know when Chris and I went to the Breakers in Palm Beach last year for a radiology conference I paid an arm and a leg for a bloody cup of tea. There was nowhere else to go though and I needed my tea so I coughed it up! :)

Have a great vacation!!! I'm so glad you "checked in"...

Jess (Fit Chick in the City) said...

Wowzers! Six dollars for coffee? I recently splurged for some expensive wine that I couldn't live without. Pathetic, I know... but coffee and wine seem like two really important things to splurge on. ;)

Erica said...

Ow! have so so so much fun! Anyway you can buy a coffee pot and some beans? Its gotta be cheaper than $6 coffee (RIDICULOUS!). Being a fellow addict though, I totally would have paid :) Enjoy every minute

Karin said...

Oh I'm so jealous! But at least I get to drink some super cheap tea over here. :) Skylar is such a cutie!

Hey Averie, looks like you're having a great time in Aruba (I was wondering where you went!) :D

re: the fudge recipe. I think you can just omit the coconut oil altogether. Yesterday I made a similar chocolate fudgey cookie that was just cashew butter, agave and cacao. It's a bit hard to mix, but YUM!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

The photos of Skylar are darling. I don't drink coffee, never could understand how something that smells so good could taste so bad. At $6.oo a cup I'm glad I don't like it! Great find on the bowls!

You brought a coffee pot with you to Aruba!?!?! I thought I was a coffee addict! And you are blogging? You are one dedicated coffee-drinking blogger! As a fellow coffee addict, what is your favorite brand/roast? I just blogged about coffee yesterday!

Hey Averie! (Remember me?)
I lurve coffee. Luuurrve luuuuurrvvvee it. But unfortunately, it puts me on fast forward mode, and a talk at a speed of like... a bagazillion words per minute, so I don't have it that often.

Wanna swap children? I'm more than happy to send out my noisy cockatiel + rat dog for Skylar... She is so cute!

Reigne. (Formerly the Baby Healthnut.)

P.S. Most of your dessert recipes call for Agave Nectar, which I can not find here in Aus... Can it be subbed for Honey?

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

I must say I would have a hard time parting with $6US for coffee. Even this addict would go home and concoct a paper towel in a funnel as an old school coffee maker. Now, if there was lots of foam and perhaps some sprinkles, I might lose my mind and pay up one time :-)

The more photos the better! And how about those tropical sunsets?

And don't tempt me with the Veuve and coffee. I could easily ice the coffee, add veuve and some ice cubes. I'm sure Protein Girl would want one too!

My husband overpaid for one of my anniversary presents, I know because I had a coupon for free shipping and they had a special price for facebook fans! He didn't take advantage of either, but what are you gonna do?

Krista said...

I overpaid on salads at Whole Foods! Salads for a family of 4 should never, ever cost $90!!!!

Dianna said...

unfortunately i overpay for things all the time! I once bought a $25 umbrella that surely was worth no more than $10 just because it was raining cats and dogs!

Ah, I just recently overpaid for something, and that something, of all things, was an apple. $1.50 for one apple. Ack!

cstironkat said...

I over paid for chocolate candy. It was ok but for the price I paid it should have been fantastic.

I can't really think of anything that I've overpaid for - I'm so frugal. LOL

I usually just put it back or don't even pick it up.

Aruba looks beautiful but i wil keep in mind to stay away from the $6 coffee.

I hate overpaying for anything. I really think I'm overpaying my cell phone service but with an Iphone my hands are tied.
