Highlights of the Week: Aruba, Xmas, Santa, Food

Happy Day After Christmas!  What are you up to today?  Please don't tell me you're going to stand in any lines to return gifts!  Or worse yet, that you got hit with a snowsnow.  Well, guess it's ok if you like snow, but I like it hot-hot-hot!   We had a great, low-key Christmas DayWe Skylar opened gifts

And we spent time just hanging out as a family

Thanks for everyone who wrote in to tell me that my family pictures were beautiful!  You really warmed me heart; I mean that!  Anytime one puts candid shots of yourself on the internet, without a drop of makeup after just waking up and in your "house clothes", i.e PJ's, it's nice to hear people think you look beautiful!  I love you all!  muah!!!!!!!!!!!  And I'm glad my prose about being a mother, a parent, reliving the holiday through your child's eyes, hit the right spot for you, too.  And I'm following up with a few deeper thoughts at the end today, too.

So without further ado, let's get started on wrapping up the week's eats, treats, highlights, and Aruba Vacation Photos!  If you missed Last Week's Recap, Go Check it Out!

Yoga Today is Pincha Mayurasana (Feathered Peacock Pose)

I love this pose because when I find the Sweet Spot where I can balance effortlessly, and there's no work involved, that's the beauty of yoga: finding the perfect balance between strength and surrender.

Tip of the Day:  In life, many times we force ourselves to do things we'd rather not, but I think it's important to reclaim our choices, our power, our autonomy, our free will so to speak, whenever possible.

For instance, attending an event that is not our cup of tea, eating food that is not right for our constitution or dietary's requirements, going to the dentist for a root canal, partaking in mindless smalltalk with an acquaintance are things that we do, but perhaps we need to find ways to both "do what need's to be done" while still honoring and respecting our own needs.

Sure, sometimes it's necessary to "suck it up" and Just Do It; sometimes your health is at stake, and sure, being socially gracious is important, but many times I think it's better to say, "Hey Wait A Minute, I Don't Want to Do This, so I'm Not Going To!"

A Few Items I have worked on already using the "Hey Wait A Minute, I Don't Want to Do This, so I'm Not Going To!"Mentality include:
Saying No when I mean it and when Saying Yes would just be too stressful for me
Not comparing myself to others' and what they have or I don't have
Allowing myself the freedom to eat the diet that I know works for me and my food intolerances and let people's comments or criticisms fall off me
Parenting and raising my child the way I see fit and not bending over backwards to accommodate what other's think.  They had their chance with their kid, it's my turn now!

Things I want to work on more:
Not forcing workouts if I am just not into them that day or week
Being on my computer less
Building more unstructured time into my days where I have time to just let things unfold organically & naturally

Not over-scheduling myself
Donating more time/resources to those who need help
Sleeping more than 5-6 hours a night

As you set your New Year's Intentions (not Resolutions, see This Post about Why), I hope you are able to be mindful of finding that Sweet Spot in life between strength and surrender, and not forcing yourself to do things, or not do things, that don't suit you.  What do you think about this?  Is it easy for you to find balance in life?  Is finding the Sweet Spot something that comes naturally for you, or have you had to consciously work to achieve it?  Or is it a work in progress?  What do you intend to work on this year?  Or this lifetime?

I hope to continue to learn more about my body and learn what works for it, and take advice from others but really find what works for me. I hope to find time for myself, I know that may sound bad, I am the type of person that will do anything for others, but nothing for me.

Saying no is something I ALWAYS need to work on! I need to be better about balancing my needs with those of others!

Wow, this week certainly flew by. Although it does seem like forever ago that we were discussing Sun Salutation and the Winter Solstice!

Finding a balance is often a challenge for me, considering everything I have going on in my life. Pressures from school, family, and even my own self often times conflict and create a lot of stress in my life. I completely agree with you Averie that sometimes we just have to take a step back and say "No." You can never regret something that you said or did on the basis of your own morals, beliefs, and emotions. I definitely plan on doing more of that this year and discovering what it is I want to do with my life, without outside influences. :)

Oh, and thank you SO much for those yoga recommendations! That "flashcard" one sounds AWESOME, and the other book sounds really intriguing. I'm definitely looking into purchasing them!

I am loving your Aruba pictures! Before college I spent a lot of time in Cabo San Lucas, as well as the Caribbean. I love the heat too- in MO right now it's windy and icy and I am not feeling it!
I need to work on saying no as well. A lot of times I let people unintentionally walk over me, and after a while that's a heavy load to carry!

Skylar is such a cutie. I really miss my kids being that age. They're 18, 15 & 11 now and while Christmas is still great, I miss the excited little faces on Christmas morning. So sweet.

You, my dear, are radiant. Every time I read an entry of yours I notice the healthy glow and the bright eyes. It really is beautiful.

I wish I was somewhere warm right about now. It's 20 degrees and snowing right now, and I like it hot, hot, hot too. I live in the wrong part of the country, obviously!

Hi Averie!
I have been following your blog for a bit and decided it is finally time for me to post! You are amazing! I love trying all your creations. Even my 7yr daughter has enjoyed all the new raw creations I have been making in the kitchen. I have a feeling we live pretty close to eachother. I recognize several of the shopping areas in your pictures. I think I have enjoyed your blog so much as we have alot in common and I mean alot. It is nice to know another person out there shares the same beliefs I do with family, nutrition, exercise, ect.

It is just me, my 7yr dd and hubby here in AZ. We have been out here now over 10yrs (yikes) and moved from So Cali as well. If you ever need any tips on anything here, I am just an email away! Thanks again for all your awesome tips, and words of wisdom. Your blog absolutely got me thru this holiday season with my crazy extended "family". Safe travels home ;) Kim

LOVE this post about finding life's sweet spot. I'm still finding my way in life and some days I can't even imagine ever finding that 'sweet spot' but, most of the time I know I will for sure. In fact, if I just relax and 'be' then, actually, it's already there! Lovely lessons, thank you for sharing your thoughts and more pictures of your adorable family. Your daughter is SERIOUSLY heartbreakingly cute! That smile just melts my heart!

What an amazing week... :)

I used to have a really hard time saying "no" and made life often really stressful for myself because I kept saying "yes" to the wrong things. Instead of doing what was right for me, I did what I "should" do without really questioning why I "should" do these things... It takes time to truly listen to yourself and do what's right for you... It's all a journey, but I feel like I'm on the right path. Great reminder and great analogy!

And to answer your question on my blog, I live in San Jose, CA. But we love San Diego. My brother-in-law lives there, and we love visiting... :) Good luck with your move back to San Diego! :)

Ya know, I think I'm fiiiinally starting to get that mentality - where I can say no now. I think it's something that has come with age for me. I just don't want to waste my time doing things I don't want to do anymore!! Last month I made it a goal to be more honest too, and that has improved my life by leaps and bounds. Seriously. Life is SO much easier and fulfilling when I'm just honest with people.

Wonderful post Averie!!

hi darling! beautiful pics as always! Skylar looks so happy with the gifts she got! I love seeing the smiley faces of kiddies!

I think in the new year I want to work on being more patient, with myself and my parents and others. I also want to try to just step back and do everything in a much slower manner, I tend to rush through things and I always end up screwing something up or missing something becuase I rush. I want to SLOW down and appreciate the moment!

Merry Christmas, Averie! Looks like a wonderful family affair. That Skylar is just ADORABLE. I love your mother daughter shots.
I completely relate to your thoughts on just saying no. So many times we force ourselves to do things, when in fact, saying no (politely) can be so empowering and freeing!
Might have to check out that mac recipe...nom nom!
Happy 2010 to you and your family!

Great post A! I love the intentions over resolutions!

I decided that instead of saying "I want to lose 10 lbs by May," I'm saying "Let's see if I can lose 10 lbs by May by doing this, this and this!" It just feels more enjoyable already!

But, yeah, I'm too old to partake in stuff I don't want to!

Namaste.

awesome post. I love all your recaps. I really enjoyed all your goals you talked about at the end of your post too. Those are fabulous resolutions and are something that i think alo of people can relate to. I know I sure can! I find it really hard to say no sometimes and I tend to over extend myself. Also forcing workouts is something Ive guilty of. Although today I was really super tired and I let my body rest instead of pushing myself. So im proud about that!
Looks like a fabulous holiday so far. Take care!!

Hey Averie- I have a random question- your salads with broc, b.s. etc- are they parboiled or just raw?

I like your intentions- and I will adopt some as my own: be on the computer less- I feel like I don't know much about the world around me (but I know what everyone had for breakfast!:-) ), so I want to start keeping up with current events.

Keep enjoying. Soooo pretty there. And yeah, I can see how Skylar will be a 6'tall statuesque beauty soon! :-)

...the Sweet Spot where I can balance effortlessly, and there's no work involved

From your lips to God's ears! May I accomplish this in this lifetime. (I'm referring specifically to this particular yoga pose. You make it all look so easy.)

I'm glad you had a relaxing Christmas, spent with family. Those are always the best ones, you remember for years to come.

Ever since my a-ha moment my sophomore year (that was the year i kicked my habit of diet soda, and all soda in general on new years eve) I haven't felt called to do any resolutions. BUT I am loooving your "intentions" list. I love how most of your intentions are to better yourself of already good parts of your life. If that makes sense. Like forgiving yourself if you don't get a workout in, and spending less time on the computer, not over-sceduling,etc. None of those things are bad necessarily, but like I said, just trying to constantly better ourselves. I like it. :)

Great week of posts Averie, and a great recap.

XOXO
