Highlights of the Week

How's Saturday going for you?  Whatcha up to?  Shopping, chilling, hanging out, frantically searching for gifts?  Fill me in!  It's Scott's birthday today and so I've been trying to make his day as special as possible!  We got hot & sweaty together this morning.  On a 4 mile power walk which was great!  And we spent time together as a family but I took Skylar for the afternoon so he could sit back, relax, and enjoy the beach and some much-deserved alone-time on his birthday!  Tonight, he requested Italian food and since the kitchen here is small and I don't really care to spend time boiling vats of water for noodles that I can't eat and turning on an oven to bake the rest, we're carrying it in from one of the bazillion Italian restaurants here on the island of Aruba.  I'll keep you posted how the food looks and if we get into any trouble on his birthday with a night out on the town.  Kidding, we have a toddler with us!

I'm glad you enjoyed my Chocolate Themed Post yesterday.
I provided backlinks for some of my popular recipes like my Raw Vegan PB Cups

and my Raw Vegan Chocolate Donut Holes

And also graced you with my take on Raw Vegan Overnight "Chocolate Brownie" Protein Oats

It tastes like an oatmeal-inspired chocolate brownie to me!  Thick, fudgey, and delish!

But let's get started with recapping my week's eats and events.  If you missed last week's recipe recap and Highlights of the Week, here you go, check it out!

We also went to the beachAnd I read.  A real, live book!  Something not from my computer screen.  Amen!!!!

I know Alison has been all over this book forever.  And so has CindyAnd so has half of the blogosphere, no doubt.  I'm addicted to reading blogs a little slow in cracking this book, but I adore it so farAdore.  Especially the part where Brendan discusses that we need sunlightPerfect.  I'm on the Equator at the moment so that totally works out for me.  Heather was just talking about her love of the sun, yesterday, too.  Seriously the recipes in the Thrive Diet are awesome, worth the price of admission for sure!

And I also read some old Yoga Journal Magazines.  I had a stack I brought with to catch up on.  Yay for catching up on the printed word, not the screen-typed word!

After we came in from the beach, I feasted on a kale, brock, cauli, cuke, and sugar snap pea salad with my homemade  Homemade Vegan Slaw Dressing.

And Skylar had a fruit plate

And mango

with some fresh, locally-made, cinnamon-raisin bread.

Yoga Today is Bhuja Pindasana

Tip of the Day:  Busyness and Rushing.  When you feel harried, crazy, rushed, running around like a chicken with your head cut off,  and like you can't catch your breath, just stopClose your eyes.  Think to yourself, I have all the time in the world.  I don't have to rush.  Envision a wise sage or Buddha sitting and calmly meditating peacefully.  Hold that mental image as you breath in and out for a couple minutes, or 5 slow breaths in and out.  When you open your eyes, carry on about your day, but just hold onto that bit of peace and calm and non-rushing attitude that you allowed yourself for those few minutes.

Do you meditate?  Do you believe in quiet moments?   Is sitting and being present, still, mindful, and peaceful easy or hard for you?  For me, as I get older, and as I have practiced to find the sweet spot of being mindful and aware, but not being too detached nor too hyper-focused on things, especially on outcomes, the practice of meditation and slowing my mind has gotten easier.  But...  My mind is always going a million miles an hour and it has taken years of work and a conscious choice to slow it down, to downshift my brain's gears, and my meditation practice has helped.  What do you do to find peacefulness and calmness?

Happy Birthday to Scott! It is snowing here like mad so I'm glad you are enjoying the warm weather. :)

And I am a firm believer in meditating and taking moments when I need them.

Oh gosh. The sun would be so great right now. Relish it.
Hope you and your guy have a nice day.
Meditate? Yeah, I don't do the yoga thing; but even 10 minutes of just sitting and breathing is an achievement for my scattered brain :)
I am not vegan or raw or anything, but enjoy your blog cause of your zest for life. Its admirable.
I sent a shout out to you today on my post re your positivity. Thanks for the comments from before. I always appreciate any comments at all.

Aruba sounds like SO much fun Averie!!! You are just glowing in this post, and I can't even imagine what a wonderful time this past week has been for you. :)

THANK YOU for your support on my sun post and including your support here! Many people just don't understand how the sun can be such a large part of our lives. I would honestly feel as though I wasn't living life to its fullest if I didn't get out in the sun's rays during the summer months. I received a few negative comments today, and it's not always easy to handle, but it's support from amazing friends like you that truly makes me feel like I am right in staying true to who I am.

I'm so jealous of your Aruban holiday! We're going to Florida for 8 days right after Xmas - but 70* is still pants weather for me - I like it HOT!

Happy birthday, Scott!

We are having a blizzard today so I went for a walk - fighting snow drifts up to you knees is a great workout!! also taking care of my sick hubs :(

I don't meditate as much as I should - I have a hamster-wheel brain often. I do pray a lot which is great for my spiritual health (love you, God) but it's not me-centric. (I have problems with being me-centric.) My fave way to relax is a (super-hot) bath with a book!

Happy birthday to Scott!
I've read Thrive, and I'm just not a huge fan. I dunno; it's just not my kind of diet. But I think it's great when anyone has come to understand themselves and their eating as well as he has

I wish I had read your tip earlier today; I definitely had a freakout moment regarding a big paper!!

Your trip looks like so much fun. My parents hate going to the beach for vacation and it's always been my mission to convince them otherwise!

Averie, I'm so glad this has been such a relaxing trip for you guys! There is definitely no substitute for a real, live book! Oh, and a very happy birthday to Scott!

Great recap, Averie!
I looove me some yoga journal. My girlfriend gets them all the time, then gives them to me when she's done with them! Gotta love it.

Thanks for that tip. I've been feeling that way a LOT lately, and need to just calm myself down.

I definitely believe in the power of meditation. I just need to make myself do it!
Enjoy the rest of your time in Aruba!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

enjoy the time with your hubs in paradise girl :)

Does prayer count as meditating? I don't meditate, because I can't really do that deep thinking to myself thing...I like to know that I'm communicating with someone, and that is God. :-)

Happy birthday to Scott!

Happy birthday, Scott!

So glad you got to relax and curl up with a book. I've read some of THRIVE as well! Sunlight IS important, as is, as you say, meditation. Sometimes I stop and listen to my breath and realize I'm either holding it in or almost hyperventilating! So I try to relax more and just... be.

Guff. Not sure if I can handle anymore chocolate :\ Ohh, who am I kidding!? I forgot all about your homemade turtles!! I'll have to make some for myself using your agave caramel (the normal stuff sometimes sketches me out a little). I also picked up little wrappers to make your PB cups soon :) After the holidays though...I see a lot more chocolate in my future...

I got through most of that Thrive book. It's pretty info heavy and dry at times, but chock full of great stuff.

Happy belated birthday to Scott!!! Hope you guys are having a fabulous time!!

Happy Birthday Scott! Looks like you're having such a great time amidst all the SUN! Family vacations are so great :)

I'm going to link back to your post on the PB cups because I made them with white chocolate cashew butter (raw, made from home!) instead of PB and they ARE SO GOOD! I am in love.

I hope you have a great vacation!

I've been thinking a lot lately how much of our brains we waste worring/stressing/ thinking about useless things, and getting way too busy for our own good. Soo pointless to live our lives like that.

I stay focused by doing a lot of planning, but balancing that out with spontaneity and trying to have an open mind.

Looks like you're having a great vacation time, and I'm totally jealous.

Happy Birthday Scott! ;) And a hello to Skylar!

Was so inspired with your peanut butter cup recipe, I HAD to give it a try. They were absolutely delicious and so simple to make! I've already made them twice. Looks like I had a family full of guiena pigs! Haha. They all loved it! Thanks!

I have bought, read, and LOVE Thrive. I use it for sports-related recipes all the time. :)

I really liked Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food"! He really shows why you really need to eat to stay healthy yet still thin!

Beth said...

I haven't read "Thrive" yet. Every time I see the book I think 'I should read that'.

Krista said...

I haven't read thrive yet but I have been hearing about it and look forward to reading it soon. Presently I am reading "Eat to Live" and I love it. I have read the China Study recently and loved it because of the solid scientific evidence that indicates the importance and value in eating a plant based diet :)

Kat said...

I have not read Thrive but a different vegan book that I love is Cafe Gratitude's Raw cookbook! It's AMAZING, my favorite, by far. :)

Meghan said...

I haven't read Thrive yet, as my library doesn't carry it. But I've gotten both Thrive Fitness and The Thrive Diet books out to read.

Love BB's book Thrive. It made me believe that I could be a competitive triathlete on a plant based diet. Great recipes.
