Highlights of the Week

Happy National Yoga Day, everyone!  As I mentioned yesterday, today is National Yoga Day and there were and are tons of studios and teachers putting on free yoga classes today!  And more than likely, if you've snoozed, you haven't totally lost out because you could possibly still snag a free class on Sunday.  And if yoga's not your thing, no worries, Janetha filled me in that Sunday, January 24 is National Peanut Butter Day.  And I know you all love your Peanut ButterOr was that Almond Butter?

Anyway, I had a great morning at yoga doing teacher training kinda stuff as I am pursing the highest level of yoga certification.  Oh, and I am so happy that it finally stopped raining here in Phoenix...Madeline actually likes this weather!  Silly girl!  It's been raining nonstop for a week!  We've hit the annual rainfall total all in the span of one week, by January 23rd.  So even though it's supposedly the desert, it's been raining buckets.  Do you like the rain?  I'm a Sunshine kind of girl, for sure!

In the spirit of recapping my week's highlights in both food, events, and random musings, let's Roll the Highlight Reel.  But first, if you missed last week's Highlights of the Week Post, here it is.

Sunday I reminded you of my Raw Vegan Cheesecake

No-Bake, Gluten & Soy Free, too!

Monday I made No-Bake Vegan Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chip Protein Bars

And they are So Easy, and So Good!

And I talked about Mental Scripts & The Stories We Tell OurselvesDo you need to change your mental chatter?
"Really, the scripts and stories we tell ourselves are endless.  There is always a reason to say, "But no.  I can't.  I shouldn't.  That won't work because..."

And I mentioned many salads and dressings I've been loving:
Mixed greens, carrots, tomatoes with my Vegan Holiday-Spice Orange Vinaigrette

And Kale, Brock, Cukes, Sugar Snap Peas, Cauli, and Homemade Vegan Slaw Dressing.

Tuesday I Met Up With fellow food-blogger, Madeline

Made a Vegan Mexican Feast
Vegan Quesadillas with homemade Ginger-Cumin-Lime Dipping Sauce

And Chocolate Mexican Wedding Cookies

And talked about Honest BloggingDo you blog your truth?  Do you fear speaking the truth?  Why or why not?  Thanks for the awesome comments, everyone!

Wednesday I Had a Huge Grocery and Mailbox Finds Post

And also discussion about the benefits of Coconut Oil, and Refined vs. Unrefined Coconut Oil.

And I asked whether you buy organic food, or not.

And I had lots of comments, thank you:

Why You Purchase Organic, or why not
What corners you cut, if you follow the Dirty Dozen Rule when buying organic....it was great!

And I made a huge saladHugh Jass: Raw brock, cauli, carrots, tomatoes, cukes, sugar snap peas, and lightly steamed Brussels'. Dressed with Vegan Slaw Dressing

And for Dessert, made a batch of Raw Vegan Chocolate Coconut Snowballs

Thursday I announced my Yoga and Raw Vegan Foods Retreat!

Friday I created a new salad dressing: Maple Ginger Dijon Vinagrette

Showed you some of my other eats:

Brock, Brussels, Carrots, Tomatoes, Cukes, mixed greens and Homemade Vegan Slaw Dressing,  it was lovely.

And this plate: a Vegan, Cesar-Inspired Salad & Brown Rice

Dressed the salad with my Vegan Creamy Tahini Cesar-Inspired Dressing

And I Made Recipes Using Up my Ripe Bananas:
Chocolate Brownie Protein Oats

Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Protein Bars

No-Bake, Gluten & Soy Free

Vegan Peanut Butter Banana Bread

Gluten & Soy Free

Vegan Banana-Nut Muffins

And I talked about Giving Back, Volunteering, and Wondering What Do You do to Give Back?

Today after yoga, I did my usual Saturday Shuffle cruising around to Trader Joe's and the regular grocery in hot pursuit of fruit & veggies.  Then I came home and cleaned it all.  Fun.  Just what any yoga teacher-wife-mother-soccer mom wants to do...clean produce on Saturday afternoon.  Any tips for making this go faster?  Oh wait, I forgot, there are no shortcuts on eating wholesome, unprocessed, natural foods...get your knife and cutting board ready!

Pineapple

Red & Green Grapes

Pears, Bananas, Tomatoes

I managed to score these strawberries!

Each 2-pint tub was only $1.88.  So, we have enough berries to get plenty of diaper rash for under $4 bucks.  Cool!

Cucumbers, Brock, & Sugar Snap Peas

And lots of other unphotographed food.  You get the point.  This should last us precisely 3 days.  Skylar plows through her piles and plates of rabbit food, too.

Yoga Today is Tittibhasana (Firefly Pose)

Half the blogosphere Some of you have written me wondering what to do if you can't lift off in any of these lifts, hoovering maneuvers, or arm balancing postures.  And what I will say is that these are poses to work towards.  I have been practicing yoga 10 years.  Although I have not practiced every, single, day for 10 years, I have probably practiced 340 days a year, every year, for the last 10 years. The physical practice of yoga is like playing the piano, learning a foreign language, running, or hiking.  In the beginning, no one sits down and bangs out a Beethoven Symphony or runs a Sub 3 Hour Marathon, but if you keep practicing, stick with it, don't give up, don't quit, don't get down on yourself, stay positive, then this will all come!  And if it doesn't happen for you, because this is not something your body wants to do, then that's fine, too, because that is YOUR YOGA, your path, your reality, your situation, unique to you.

Tip of the Day:  Embrace yourself for who you are, both your strengths and your challenges, and don't compare yourself to others!  You may not be amazing at yoga, or in the kitchen, but you may be a great writer.  Or, you may be a horrible listener because you're always talking, but you're witty and people love it when you talk because you crack everybody up!  Or you may have a hard time finding balance in your life, but you speak 3 languages fluently.  Point being, everybody is at a different place and that's great!!  Plus, wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same?

What's your biggest gift or strength?  Biggest challenge?
My biggest gift I think is my ability to lead others by breaking down big or complicated things into manageable realities.  I feel like with yoga or raw foods or problem-solving with friends and clients, that I can take big things and break them down and people are far less overwhelmed and much more inspired to try their hand.
Biggest challenge is overcommiting and lacking in the personal down-time department, but I'm working on it!

What are you working on?  What comes easy?

And on other random matters, what's your idea of a dream Sunday?
Mine would be breakfast in bed, followed by a maid coming and doing all my cooking & cleaning for me, going to do yoga, having childcare lined up, and coming home to a gourmet raw-ish vegan meal.  Followed by the perfect amount of family time, then alone with a backstack of books & magazines, right before the in-home personal a masseuse arrives.  And with that, I can keep dreaming!  What's your dream day??

You had me at national peanut butter day. I'll be celebrating!
My Saturday has been great. I ate raw and vegan for lunch and dessert(and am totally jumping that banwagon for dinner)
I think biggest strength would be my mind. Biggest weakness would be timidity

Yes National PB day! I will definitely be celebrating tomorrow, and tonight probably. I love it. There are so many amazing goodies in this post I don't even know where to start!!!!

Have a great rest of your weekend!

i think what you're saying is like you know, doing it every day, practicing, like my EDDS! =D
national pb day? I HAD THE LAST OF MY JAR TODAY! sob.

i'm not sure what my greatest strength is? determination? perseverance? i set a goal and go at it tenaciously.
weakness? i'm way sensitive and take things way too seriously.

National Yoga day? National PB day? In one weekend? I think some celebrations are called for...

I'm still trying to "find myself..." my gifts, my strengths... So far, I think my biggest strength would be my(non-stop) talking (just need to find a way to use it positively!)... My biggest weakness would be taking things too seriously, being too sensitive, perfectionism and not knowing when to shut up.

Dream Sunday? Running, yoga, reading (blogging!)and cooking yummy things... Basically today.

LOVE ehat you said about yoga. I always have to remind myself that it's MY practice, not anybody else's :)
I think my biggest talent is writing and sharing my emotions with the world in that creative format. I need to work on working in groups and having less social anxiety. thanks for the great post!
And PS -- my perfect Sunday would definitely include some yoga and a massage too!

Andrea@WellnessNotes said...

Okay, I'm stealing your "dream Sunday!" :)

I think being at peace with who we are and where we are at in life is so important. That doesn't mean we can't strive to achieve things and to work towards goals (which can be inspired by others), but it's so important to live in the moment and to be proud of who we are right now...

Love your weekly recap posts! :)

Happy Weekend!

Well since I honored National Pie Day today, I suppose I might as well honor National PB Day tomorrow! Something tells me it won't be too hard to follow through on. ;)

Whipped up a half batch of your choc chip cookie dough ball-batter today (amazing, thank you) and threw little nubs of it in the ice cream maker with some chocolate coconut milk ice cream. I think I have maximized the deliciousness effectively. :)

I think my biggest gift and strength is empathy. I also think my biggest challenge is applying that empathy without fear. Sounds odd, but true.

I agree that you are definitely a fantabulous leader and are good at "breaking down big or complicated things into manageable realities."

What am I working on? Being kinder to myself. It's amazing that I find it SO easy to be kind to and respectful of others, yet I'm SO hard on myself! Crazy, eh?

What comes easy? I think being kind to others. Sharing myself and just trying to be an encouragement and genuine person comes easy for me.

Your dream Sunday sounds fantabulous! Mine would include a cottage in the woods with a giant comfy chair, my laptop, lots of healthy food, herbal tea, raw juices, smoothies, and peace and quiet. Of course, the massage you mentioned sounds fantabulous, too! ;-)

Great post, girl!

Hugs,
Michele

ah patience with myself - something I strive to achieve with each yoga practice. Thank you so much for this post girl... tomorrow, you are my intention :) <3 I love you!

p.s. thanks for the shout out -- I definitely got to celebrate big time tomorrow!!!!!!!!

Tried the cheesecake and it was pretty good! I think next time I am going to either smash in or blend in raspberries. I thought of it last minute and already had everything assembled. Cheesecake it was of my downfalls since child hood so it was super hard to stay out of the freezer.

My biggest strength would be my ability to always find either the good or positivity in almost anything. I am not fond of NEGATIVE people!

Gabriela said...

I finally made your Chocolate Chip PB bars...they're freezing now, and I can't wait to get my hands on them! Absolutely amazed by the pose, btw- you go girl!

Biggest strength is my loyalty. I'd rather have one good friend than a thousand so-so ones, so I stick with them to the end, no matter what. That being said, my biggest weakness is my need to please people. I'm way too sensitive to what others think!

Can't wait for National PB day :)

so behind, but everything looks delicious as always averie!!! that cheesecake, homemade protein bars, salads... i'm craving one right now :) checking out the retreat deets, too!

I love your reminder about how we are all in different places. I tend to be really hard on myself if I am not the best at everything, so that reminder really hit home for me. I am good at teaching and remembering everything. I drive people crazy with how much I remember. Now that I am getting back into yoga, I also liked your reminder about making it my yoga. Good stuff Averie, as always! Thanks for all of your encouragement and delicious delights. I hope by some cosmic influence your peaceful Sunday comes to fruition. Maybe at least one of those awesome things will happen. I would just like to sleep in. I have a 6month old and that is nearly impossible, but I will send it out to the universe. Have a great day!

Wait- did I miss a memo- strawberries and diaper rash?? You are a bigger man than I for even stepping FOOOOOOT into a TJs on a saturday. I'd rather go at 8:57pm any other day than Saturday and risk life and limb or be trampled by a crazed crowd!

A strength of mine is staying pretty calm in scary situations (I'm thinking of medical, hospital etc). I need to work on remaining calm in not-emergency situations (Like when you think they wont let you out of the food show with 8 pounds of single serving samples!) hee hee!

Have a wonderful sunday (which sounds ideal to me too- esp the masseuse!!)

Wow...this post speaks to me. I need to accept me now as I am (as much as I dont like it) and not compare. SO MUCH harder to do than to say...so much harder...work in progress...and i am slow...
I am definitely not into yoga. I wish I could be...but I cant afford anything, and my mind races and gets bored...maybe some years down the road sometime maybe.
I like your higlights posts. Yay for PB day :)

Hi Averie, I haven't commented before (but have lurked extensively), and one of my new years resolutions was to comment more on blogs that make me happy (that's an easy resolution, no?).

You reminded me, I had better do some yoga before the night is out! It will be good on my sore muscles, so it's a win win.

I also wanted to say, your easy PB cups have been saving my diet recently! I can't believe how satisfying they are, I should probably try some balls while I'm at it!

AVERIE! why are you so awesome?! you dominate at life, being a mom, yoga, food..and everything! keep on being GREAT!!
love these highlights!

LOVE IT! That hemp ice cream looks fantastic. Mmmm! All vegan ice cream looks pretty fantastic when you are living in a country that doesn't have any!!!! ;-)

I'm still over the moon about your raw/yoga retreat. That is such a brilliant idea and you know if I was not half a world away I would be there in a flash.

LOVELY pictures and lovelier reminder about taking things one day at a time. I'm trained as a dancer, but running has made me completely non-flexible, which makes me get discouraged quickly with yoga. Thanks for this post!

sophia said...

averia, you eat a lot of sweet stuff! I'm guessing you're more of a sweet to a savory kind of girl? hee hee, maybe that's why you're so sweet! ;-)

Danielle said...

Yay for national yoga day (and peanut butter day!) I think it should just be "nut butter..."
I think my biggest strength is also my biggest weakness. I'm a very all-or-nothing person which can be good & bad

Erica said...

Peanut butter day? I'm so celebrating to the max :) Maybe a little nut butter at every meal?? That retreat looks amazing! ahhh! I am so with you- I'm a sunshine girl! I can't wait until we go away in March. All of your fresh fruits and veggies look like heaven to me. As soon as Josh's new protein powder gets here, I'm making those bars!

*Naomi* said...

well I am late to the party so i wanted to wish you a late happy national yoga day my love!! I hope youhad a fabulous day, ithink thats a great idea that lots of studios are offering free yoga in celebration of the day!! and national PB day?! I shall be celebrating quite well today :)

hmm I think my strength would be that I am independent and certainly speak my mind where need be!! my flaws are that I need to work better on change, and transitions. I get very anxious when things are thrown at me that were not in my scheduled plans, ya know>

your dream sunday sounds perfect! I think mine would def be something similar! breakfast in bed, then just relaxing, and having my personal chef (haha) cook everything for me and my familt\y!!

Paige@ RunningaroundNormal said...

I love your recap posts! I totally missed the raw vegan cheesecake. Checking that out now, btw.
Unfortunately didn't celebrate national yoga day, but I have a feeling I'll be celebrating the peanut butter ;)

glad you are continually working at deplugging...its a process...just like yoga, running, working at things you want to improve. it won't come overnight, but i trust that you are working towards something that works for YOU!

love ya lady!

You better believe I will be celebrating National PB Day! Of course, I do my best to celebrate every day! I think my greatest strength is my ability to get things done. I can always power through tasks. I do need to work on being able to brush things off. It's hard for me to take criticisms and move on sometimes!

Rosapatrice said...

Thank you for such great vegan salad ideas and dressings. I am gong to make some today. You are making me crave my veggies, you veggie girl, you!! :)
For some reason, I am not able to find the bananna bread recipies and i wanna make that so bad.

Guess my greatest strength is leading people. I am very outgoing and love people!!

I think my greatest strength is my ability to see the positive in every situation and to find what I am grateful for in the worst of moments. It took years of practice, but it has become who I am.

Enjoy your yoga!

Just dropping in to let you know that I'm FINALLY making your beautiful balls today - and maybe the protein bars too. So excited!

That Tempt ice cream looks delish! Never seen it before.

National PB day? that's hilarious! I don't digest peanuts , but I loooove them :( Had to switch to almond butter years ago, but every now and then I eat a little natural PB despite the fact I'll pay for it :D
