But the difference was that Maureen came with baby Ava.
Skylar thought it was pretty cool that there was a "baby" there. As if she's "so old" now, considering we just had Skylar's 3rd Birthday Party last week and all.
Here's Skylar noshing on her snacks and hamming it up. With Fashionista Barbie nearby.
And here we all are
It was lovely meeting Maureen and Ava and we can't wait to get together again, soon!
So moving along...
Do you have Valentine's Day Plans? Sadly, there will be nothing too exotic or special going on around here. The days of Tiffany's Blue Boxes and dozens of roses are behind us. Getting excited over cheap organic produce and trying to save money by shopping at TJ's while hoping Skylar gets the hang of this potty-learning thing fairly soon because diapers are expensive is kinda more our speed these days. Oh not to mention, Scott's traveling later in the week so that alone
Before I get to that, just wanted to thank everyone who chimed in with the comments on the Vegan Fudge & Food Rules post. Your thoughts about Michael Pollan, and Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Diet.. were most appreciated and as I said, it's all about being conscious, mindful, letting go of this desire to be "perfect" with every single food choice we make. Because as I said in that post, the beauty of food and our food choices is that in 3 hours, you can eat again and choose more wisely next time. Keep it easy, relaxed, and mellow is what I try to do!
But let's talk about Valentine's Day Desserts!
Easy, Fast, Valentine's Day Dessert Number 1
My Vegan Fudge
Ahhh, good stuff!
It's rich, decadent, fudgy, wonderful. Good vegan stuff. And it's soy/nut/gluten free which is a bonus in my book. Vegan Fudge. Chocolate Sprinkles Optional, of course. Deb, Allie, Susan I wonder if you total hotties fabulous ladies will use sprinkles or not? That was a dumb question, wasn't it.
This fudge is really simple, and it really takes about 10 minutes and you're done. And this is my Dessert Suggestion #1 for your Valentine's Day Sweetheart. You're thinking, but I don't have a Sweetheart. Yes, you do: Yourself! Make it for yourself!!! Easy, Fast, Valentine's Day Dessert Number 2
Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries
Enter my 2 Pints for $3.99 recent find
I have no idea why restaurants try to charge like $5 bucks per chocolate-dipped berry when they are so easy to make at home.
Maybe size does matter (TWSS); the bigger ones bring in more money.
Ingredients:
2 pints strawberries, washed and dried
1 bag Chocolate Chips or 10 Baker's Chocolate Squares
Optional: 1 tbsp. Coconut Oil
1 bag Chocolate Chips or 10 Baker's Chocolate Squares
Optional: 1 tbsp. Coconut Oil
and p.s. I have a Coconut Oil Give Away going on too!
Directions:
1) Line a cookie sheet or tray with parchment paper and set aside.
2) Melt chocolate in microwave (Put 3/4 of bag of Chocolate Chips or and coconut oil if you're using it, in a microwaveable container. Heat for 30 seconds, stir. Repeat. Heat until most of the chocolate is melted. Add remaining chocolate and stir until smooth.) or melt over stovetop in a double boiler.

Easy, Fast, Valentine's Day Dessert Number 3...
Peanut Butter Cup & Dark Chocolate Carmel Chocolate Chip Cookies
Oh Wait, You'll Have to Stay Tuned for Tomorrow's Post- Part 2 for this Recipe!
After I left My Blogger Meetup with Maureen, Skylar and I went to pick up the Coffee Mug we Painted for her 3rd Birthday.
It was such a fun day!
This was the Before
And this is the Finished Mug After Firing.
It's one of those memories I will cherish as a mother. Who cares if the mug turned out cute or not. The memory of spending the day with my lil pumpkin on her 3rd Birthday, messy purple paint and all, is what I will always remember.
For Dinner yesterday I made a Cesar-Inspired Salad. Mixed greens, carrots, cucumbers, fresh & sun-dried tomatoes.
And dressed it with my homemade Creamy Tahini Raw Vegan Dressing
Maureen is a fan of this one! And I know that tahini and hummus and nooch variations have been all the rage lately. I've been enjoying my tahini-inspired dressing for awhile, too! Feel free to add hummus or nooch til your hearts content because nooch just makes everything better, doesn't it!
Dessert was Vegan Fudge.
Love It
Yoga Today is One Legged-Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana)

Hard to believe that just 6 Weeks Ago I was Here in Aruba.
I'd be lying if I said an afternoon on the beach wouldn't totally rock right about now! I'll just have to live vicariously through the Pea Family Trip that's coming up.
For Newer Readers who Missed My Trip, Enjoy Pictures Here or Here or Here. And for Older Readers who just want to torture yourself with gorgeous beach scenes, have at it! haha! Questions:What's your Take on Valentine's Day and Gifts? If you're in a relationship, do you give your significant other gifts, on Valentine's Day and on other holidays?
I got married fairly young, so I've been married 9 years, together nearly 11 years. When we were first together, we did gifts on any, and all, holidays. Hmmm, Groundhog Day just passed, is that a gift-giving holiday or not...kidding! But back in the day, we never missed a holiday with the gifts, flowers, dinners out, blingy kind of presents, the whole bit. Fast forward a decade, a child, largely living on one income because let's face it yoga teacher's aren't getting rich these days, and we don't do gifts anymore. You can read all about that here. I mean, I'd never turn a gift down, I'm not a Saint! But as a general rule, we'd rather just save our money and put it towards a big trip at the end of the year, and real life stuff that just comes up takes financial priority over gifts...like new windshields and dental work and health insurance premiums. Do You Give Gifts on Valentine's Day?
Are you doing anything for Valentine's Day? If so, what?!!! Let's face it ladies, we'd be lyin' if we said we weren't hoping for a Blue Box, a Dozen Roses, and a really nice Dinner Out. Ok, I'll speak for myself, but as I already mentioned, nothing special planned.
Are you buying anything for your significant other or do you exchange cute little Valentine's Day things with your friends? What are you getting them?
Do you think that the best gifts are homemade?
I like giving homemade goodies and treats because I think it shows that you cared enough to do something that took some time and effort, like cooking, or painted pottery kind of gifts. So in many ways, you really can't go wrong with homemade. What do you think of homemade gifts?

I LOVE homemade gifts! I truly think they come from the heart. My hubby and I don't have anything special planned, but he is planning on making dinner and BLOGGING about it. :)
You got to meet Mommy RD! How fun! She seems like such a nice person!
I think homemade gifts are the best! We have no major plans.. just to enjoy each other's company :)
the hubs and i make each other cards...though he always shows me up since he's an artist & i'm a scientist :) i try!
Press is meet up central! Can you believe that I will be stuck in NYC until FRIDAY???!!!! Crazy!
I definitely think homemade gifts are the best - they come from the person's heart, creativity, and they took the time to make something they thought you might enjoy. Those are the bestest!!
Excited about your coconut oil giveaway - I got all my entries in!!! :-D
So glad you got to meet another bloggie pal - awesomeness!!!
And that's a sweet, gorgeous mug - tell Skyler she did a fantabulous job!! :-)
Big hugs,
Michele
Looks like a fun day! And I think the mug looks great =)
I love home made gifts as well! The boyf and I are living on our own for the first time so we are quite broke... thus nothing fancy for V-day but we DID go to a raw foods cooking class last night we enjoyed. It was less than $40 and well worth it, and a fun time for both! =D
xo
K
P.S. I sent you an email, respond when you can =)
Hey girl!!
i DEF think home made gifts are the best!! they are my fav-and they come from the heart! ARGH i have no idea what me and my boy are doing! i usualy give him candy or something simple like a picture frame..I may bake him something this year tho! you hubby is SUPER lucky to have you-with your incredible baking skills!!
She is so cute! I love your dessert ideas too!!
Aww, baby Ava is so cute!
Valentine's day is one of those holidays where I think homemade gifts are really special. When I was a kid, my parents always did a V-day scavenger hunt with little prizes along the way, so it reminds me of that happy memory. Not sure what my hub and I have on the agenda for this year...my husband has Christmas, my birthday, and Valentine's day all in a pretty close time range, so by the time V-day comes around, he's kind of done with buying me gifts, lol :-)
LOVE Skylar's mug! So precious!
Those desserts looked amazing!! My husband and I don't do Valentine's Day. We just get eachother cards and spend the night IN! Boring but it is so us! :)
I think the mug turned out beautifully!! You will cherish that for life!
We don't do holidays. We sing happy birthday and I make some gifts here and there but all in all everyday is special and we just don't want to wait for a special day at the expense of the one we have today.
Finances also play a big role too. We might catch a few extra alone moments on Valentines day but other than that its just another day! We spend lots of time together as a family already.
Valentines candy is fun though!!!
I do think homemade gifts are the best and then beyond that practical ones come in second.
Have a great day Averie!
What a fun meet-up! And OMG those strawberries seriously look amazing. Such a great Valentine's treat.
I have to admit that I've never been the biggest Valentine's Day fan. But if you have a special someone in your life, I think it's a great opportunity just to do a little something special to show you care!
xxoo
Heather
that fudge is making me drool! Wow, that place in Aruna looks gorgeous!
Yay for blogger meetups, they are so much fun! I am not big into Valentine's day, but if I was I would like a homemade gift over a store bought one probably. :)
Those strawberries make my mouth water. Yummy! ;-)
Valentines day has never been a big deal for us. We married young too (at 19 and 20) and started a family right away. I wouldn't change a thing. =) Valentine's days for years now have been about sweet homemade gifts (if we do gifts at all) or just fun family celebrations.
It is our custom to celebrate each other every day. Not a day goes by without an "I love you" and hugs. I can't remember a day when the hubs didn't say he thinks I'm beautiful.(Even though I think he needs a stronger prescription for his glasses. LOL!) We don't need a "special" day for that. ;-)
Aww what a fun meet up!! Chocolate sprinkles optional?! No, they must be required! Either chocolate or rainbow sprinkles ;)
Pigeon!! I love that pose! I've never really done V-day gifts. I'm not a big chocolate girl (don't kill me!) and I'm SO NOT romantic at all. The best gifts are homemade - I love giving a gift that's homemade because usually the person REALLY likes it. There's more meaning behind it.
Have a great evening!!
Sounds like a very fun coffee date. Baby Ava is so adorable:) And is Skylar ever not happy? I swear, that girl is alll smiles from our point of view at least ;)
Love her pottery! Hope she gets the potty training down for a V-day present! hehe
I can't wait for those other recipes tomorrow! The cookies sound amazing.
V-Day will be spent with the boyfran, Brad. Actually, the whole weekend will be. He's coming home (from the Uni) to hang out with me. We're planning on going to see "Dear John" and I have a homemade card blueberry dessert to give him. Nothing crazy or expensive. Just simple treasures for my lovely boy. :)
Hey hon! Those blogger meet up sound crazy fun! You have got to get to SoCal so we can hang!! Hit up some awesome raw vegan eats and soak up some sunshine=)
(Im still planning on coming to SD in August..working on details!)
Skylar's mug turned out awesome! How cute. Its one of those things too that would be so much fun to keep and kind of look back on in a few years.
Loving the chocolate goodness here! My hubs and I are getting a hotel downtown just for fun. Maybe run around and find a good restaurant. Id love to make him something though. I think honestly home made gifts are the best. So a big batch of your vegan fudge and those super yummy chocolate strawberries might be in order! Sooo good! mmMM..I love the addition of the chocolate sprinkles. omg...
When you were talking about salad dressing, it made me smile. Ive seriously been eating that slaw dressing like everyday for two months now..all those salad pics that i got? all topped with slaw dressing! So good!! I like it mixed with lentils right now. Awesome combo.
I think valentines day is a tad overrated. Why just one day to show your significant other you care? Plus the pressure. I like random surprises personally! Im more of a saver though. This sounds funny but I get mad at my hubs for buying me stuff sometimes! he loves to shop and Im always wanting to save it towards a house or something. Plus Im just happy without things. Id rather go somewhere like a fun hike or the beach for a day then buy things. I dunno, just me though=) Although not gonna lie, its really sweet.
I think home made gifts are the best! Id rather have something someone put some time and loving into. Always makes for the most fun gifts.
Anyways sweetie, have a rockin night!!
Now I so regret not buying that package of strawberries! I had them in my hand less than two hours ago... Ah, well, there's still time!
I love the mug, it turned out so cool looking! I have a friend in her twenties who still uses plates she and her sister made when they were 4 and 7!
I actually kind of hate Valentine's Day, a bunch of sentimental garbage used to trick us into buying stuff we don't need :P But this year I'm spending it with a bunch of good friends and it's nice to have a reason to celebrate love in all forms :)
I think homemade gifts are the sweetest, but truth be told I sometimes have difficulty parting with them at the end! Especially if it's a one-in-a-kinder and I've spent OOODLES of time on it! Sometimes, I actually think that I might value it more than the recipient will! Is that terrible?
Oh well. I guess I can be terrible. Homemade or not, I think it depends on the person - you have to strike a balance between effort, appreciation, and time!!
Fun meetup, once again.. so jealous. You guys look so amazing, great pic!!!
V-Day.. just goin to dinner.. nothin crazy. We really dont exchange gifts.. Ill take a hug ;)
Pigeon is my favorite pose!
*Check out the week of giveaways on monicaonthego.com*
That fudge looks yummy! Anything with sprinkles is extra fun :>
I made baked goods for everyone for Christmas last year. Everyone LOVED it. Plus I was pretty proud of myself :) Homemade gifts are a great idea!
I think it's so neat that you meet other bloggers. Too bad you still don't live in Myrtle :)
Hi Averie!
I am cooking a nice V-day dinner at home for the entire family. I am making heart shaped Vegan pizza with no Gluten flour. For dessert, I'm making baked doughnuts (gluten free and low fat, of course!)
See ya!!! :)
looks like a fun blogger meet up!! Where do you live? I'm jealous of the weather :)
Wow I am drooling over that fudge!
Averie, now I can't wait to pick up my pottery!
I am not into Valentine's Day, not that I'm Grinchy . . . I am very joyful and loving, but not into the holiday. I prefer surprise attacks of love.
The best gifts for me involve creativity. :)
Thanks for the pancake tips, Averie! I will definitely try them again with more oil and whole flax seeds. Probably with a different flour too. Is it possible to grind coconut shreds to make coconut flour?
homemade gifts are the best! I hope you are my secret valentine so I can have lots of your goodies!
love all of your blogger meetups! man, i wished I loved closer to you!
valentines day? I will be with my BF's entire family in canada so I am not thinking anything too romantic! well at least we will be togehter, thats all that matters!
skylars mug came out awesome!!
Hey, I feel honored to have made your blog. I also posted about our meetup today. ;-)
We don't do much for V-Day. I refuse to go out and give in to inflated prices just because of the date. We usually make a heart shaped pizza and have some good wine. We did do gifts the first couple years, but now we've become more sensible.
I ALWAYS love something homemade.
So awesome to have another meet-up- and who doesn't enjoy more coffee! Skylar's coffee cup looks amazing.. And we know how much fun you both had in the making process, definitely a memory keeper for years to come I'm sure! I LOVE strawberries <3 James and I have never had much money- and usually make all of our cards and keep things simple on things like birthdays and Valentines day.. but Christmas and anniversary we kind of go nuts.. James likes to spoil me and who am I to complain?! This year we are going to be in North Carolina visiting family, but I did get James a little gift of some chocolate and movie passes, and of course a card.. I hope you enjoy what time you will have together- Happy Valentines day my dear! xxx
Where in the western suburbs did you used to live? I'm moving there in a few months!
I don't really care about valentine's day either. I think it's more of a holiday for people who aren't in long term serious relationships.
I used to get excited to receive flowers from nate on valentine's day... but now we are to the point where it doesn't bother me if we just ignore the holiday completely.
I could go for that vegan fudge, though!
Holy yum... that fudge looks awesome! :)
We are doing a $10 limit (since I just got my big sparkly ring, and it's my 30th birthday very soon I figured it's all good!)
So I am trying to come up with some creative things!! :)
Great post...
your vegan fudge looks too good to be true!
I love homemade gifts beacause they are so much more meaningful than something I would buy at the mall. I would honestly appreciate a handmade gift/card much more than anything else =)
I love chocolate covered strawberries!!! And yes homemade gifts are the best, I normally bake things for others ; ) shocker I know
ahhh, the ole Valentine's Day dilemma for married people...
We picked Feb 15th to get married, and we swore that we wouldn't mix V-day with our anniversary.
We'll we've held to that but for so many years gift exchanges next to cards and a nice meal together has been it, money has been tight for most of our marriage (which will be 7 years on Monday)
I'm kinda ready for a little jewelry or even perfume (I AM OUT)
Hubs is ready to be able to send flowers and the small treats we enjoyed when we were dating.
it's been a while.
I think you should never NEED a gift to say I love you, if it's in your heart it's there and you find ways each day to show your heart's feelings. but if you have a few nickels, a card or a surprise treat is always fun too.
we've been thru both.
as always averie...great food for thought.
oh, chocolate covered strawberries is a family valentines treat around here...must make those this weekend.
Have a great day.
Glad I got a chance tonight to pop on and say HI. The work thing is taking it's toll on me! xoxo
I just got back from a night away with my manfriend! was so excited to sneak away, we did it early- that and his family is having a dinner on the 14th- I'm whipping up Jessica's red velvet cake- you protein bars are on for friday though- my other chalkie ones are almost out (thank god!).
Whats the best thing to use coconut oil for?!
This is my first valentine's day without my classroom full of fourth graders. So of course in order to get through it I need to immerse myself in some raw vegan chocolate. :-)
We give gifts but a gift can be taking each other out to dinner or making a pie for the other one. We are spending a lot of time together lately that I feel like I don't "need" valentine's day as much as I have when we've been super stressed or busy. In that case it can help the relationship refocus.
As for friends I don't do much usually although I did send out a silly valentine card out to some people. I like cards.
the 4 of you look like such a fun bunch to hang out with! aww ava is a cutie, sweet that skylar was interested in the baby, not all kids are! i have no plans for v-day and i'm kinda liking it that way!
No surprise here - I love giving homemade gifts. Every year for Christmas, I do all homemade. It's way more fun for me and (I think) everyone else.
V-Day? Meh. I've never been into it. But if someone were to give me chocolate, I wouldn't say no!
Thank you for your sweet comment on my post over at meals and moves! Valentines day I am going to a castle with my dad and his girlfriend if the weather is ok.......I'm single again and don't fancy another one alone this will be my 8th!
Goodness that fudge looks sooooo good! x x
You and your daughter are so adorable! I love pottery and it is the best hobby! Relaxing too...I cant wait to try those recipes :)
NOTHING better than chocolate covered strawberries!!
My Mom always made my brother and I make homemade cards for every birthday and holiday -- there is something so personal about them! I still make little Christmas cards for my family every year =)
I used to get the blue box, too, but times have changed. We've been married for 8 1/2 years and together for 10 1/2 years. We've got two kids now, and they come first.
We get them some small things for Valentine's Day to make them feel special. Jacob especially likes coloring books, crayons and some candy (he is a kid).
I usually give Matthew a card and cook (yes, I did say "cook") him his favorite dinner. He gets me flowers (this year, due to snow, he gave them to me early; I got sunflowers, as I've been dreaming of sunnier weather) and my favorite chocolate (sometimes raw, but this year in was Endangered Species, which can easily be found at the local grocery store. The snow has become an obstacle, affecting the mail system around here).
In the end, I don't miss that blue box. I rarely wear the stuff anyway. I like to keep things simple :-)
I am definitely a homemade gift kinda gal! You sound like us...we have been together for almost 16 years and married for almost 15 (we were really young when we got married). We have two kids and the gift giving stuff is more for them! I think spending time together is the best gift that my husband and I could give each other. Sounds corny, but it is very true!
Ahhhh - I can't comment on any BLOGspots from my own computer - only on someone else's - which is only in a blue moon - but I'm still reading -promise!!! Your pictures are beyond ridiculously good - chocolate-covered strawberries!
OMG to that vegan fudge seriously - toooooooooooo good looking. I've never tried coconut oil...seems to be uber-popular now though...
The mug turned out soooooo cute!!! We've been together over ten years, and we're to the point where we'd rather just be together and DO something instead of give something. I took Monday off so we could hang out and Saturday we're going to explore Vashon Island, a part of Seattle that neither one of us has been to. You take a short ferry ride so it will feel like a little (cheap) getaway.
My husband and I used to do gifts on valentines day until our daughter was born. Now he just gets me flowers and I get him candy. We get a sitter and go out to dinner alone. Thats all we really want these days is a little husband and wife time :) Plus christmas JUST PASSED! My husbands birthday is in a couple weeks and my birthday is in march. Its expensive this time of year lol.
Averie, those treats look amazing! Please be my valentine :)
No special plans for me this year. Im working all day long from 11:30 to 7 so that should be fun. I put together a nice basket of vegan goodies for my mama so hopefully she will like them :)
We're rubbish at celebrating Valentine's. Last year (and this year) we spent it with the in-laws. We probably won't buy each other anything either. Wow, we sound so boring! We may go out somewhere for a nice meal though :)
PS I LOVE your peanut butter cups!
hey averie! everytime i see those brownies i get a little hungrier (: i love homemade gifts! they are so special and creative. getting a homemade gift is the best feeling in the world. i wish i could participate in the coconut oil giveaway but im in london ): i miss living in the states! have a great day xoxo soph
Averie you are genius...I can't express how much your comment lit up my day...you are so special and to have someone who actually reads the comments I make or show interest among the beautiful and fantastic readers you have is a wonderful thing. Love it girl!
I put it on my facebook!

Love the sprinkles on your vegan fudge!
Hey I saw your post about comments and wanted to leave one but couldn't find where to leave it! I maybe being dumb x x
Of course I'd cover some crazy delicious (un)vegan fudge with sprinkles!! Actually, now that I think of it, chocolate dipped strawberries, dipped in sprinkles sounds really good! Thanks for being my muse :)
Back in the days when I had a boyfriend, we always did very low key Valentines Days. No gifts, and a cheap dinner out (last year was to a diner at a gas station). This year, I have a big blogger meet-up scheduled which should be a blast!
Oh, and I almost always do homemade gifts unless I find something that the other person will reallyreally like. I actually painted pottery for xmas this year! Although, I think I've got some artistic competition now that Skylar's on the scene ;)
I kept expecting the Beatles to enter the shot in your second photo. ツ
Skylar, I just looooooove your Fashionista Barbie. Your Birthday mug is very beautiful too. What a fun day you had! Lucky girl.
Guess what I did during the blizzard du jour? Made raw chocolate-covered strawberries! A V-Day staple, for sure. The question is, will they last until Sunday? Ummmmm, probably not.
I read this post yesterday but couldn't comment at work. I am reading via my Kindle but commenting is tricky. ( and time consuming which I don't have anymore on breaks at work)
I'm still here, just trying to re-negotiate my blog time.
xoxoxo
I love how the colors got deeper and darker after the mug was fired. I also like the shininess... I'd use that mug often! :)
V-day we don't do gifts as a rule, we buy stuff when we need it not on some particular day... but, I caught my guy reading this the other day... http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2010/02/10-ways-to-a-geeky-girls-heart/...
Since I suck at surprises and he saw that I saw him reading, he showed it to me... after which I said...
Game night either board games or video games, daisies, and I'd love for you to ask me how to cook something specific and we cook together in the kitchen... :)
