Tip and Q & A of the Day: Are Oats Gluten Free?
This is sort of a trick question.  I'll explain.
Oats themselves are gluten-free.  However, the issue that arises is that in the planting of oat crops, harvesting, milling, and transporting the oats, they are frequently cross-contaminated with wheat, rye, or barley which all are gluten-containing grains.   So yes, oats are gluten-free inherently but they are surface-level contaminated with gluten, sometimes in large amounts, sometimes in trace amounts.  For individuals with true Celiac Disease, gluten should be avoided at all costs.

For individuals like myself who are gluten-sensitive and gluten-intolerant, but it's not a matter of life-and-death, to each his or her own whether they choose to purchase specifically certified Gluten-Free Oats.  My gluten intolerance is not sensitive enough that I need to do this and I am fine using conventional oats, but I also don't ever eat more than 1/3 cup per day or I will feel the effects systemically; but..

..."There are several companies who now sell "certified gluten-free oats," which are oats that are farmed, harvested, processed and packed using special methods to avoid cross-contamination with gluten during every step of the way. Gluten-free oats currently sell for around $4 to $5 a pound." (source)

If you feel that organic oats, Trader Joe's or WF's many varieties of oats, the bulk bins at your food co-op, or even Quaker Oats won't suffice and need a truly Gluten-Free option, check out Gluten Free Oats or Bob's Red Mill GF Oats.

So that was a long-winded answer but like I said, it's tricky and only your own personal detective work will tell you whether you need Certified GF Oats or not.

What is Your Favorite Recipe Using Oats?  If you have a great one you can drop the link in the comments!

Do you do overnight or soaked oats?  Do you like bowls of oatmeal or do you prefer to use your oats IN things, like in cookies or protein bars?  I'm the later, for sure.  The oatmeal bowls go straight to Scott and I love my dough balls and cookies with oats in them!

Do you ever think that bloggers post tooo many bowls of oatmeal?  haha!  kidding, but I think on a daily basis I see about 25 bowls of oats on different blogs.  Do you think bloggers post alot of oatmeal bowl, too?  With almond or nut butter on top, but of course...haha!

Fantastic oats! When we thought Lulu was gluten intolerant, our first big trigger food was oats. She'd vomit VIOLENTLY every time she ate them, so she and I both went GF for a year (the whole bfeeding thing), and I missed my oats SO much. They are so versatile. I really should try to incorporate oat flour into my baking more and see how it holds up.

Have a good night, sweetie. We are hanging in here.

I like how you kept eating oats even going raw. That's an oat devotee.

Gah...EV.RE.THING. looks insanely good. Anything with sticky looking oats, nut butter and chocolate makes me drool. I also really need to get on the chia bandwagon. Next grocery store trip for sure.

These all look so incredible!

My favorite has got to be the chocolate chip cookie dough balls :)

Tess said...

Yum, I LOVE oats, oatmeal cookies, oats in bars, oatmeal, oat milk. I think my favorite is still plain oat meal, it's so comforting! I had no idea that oats are naturally gluten free. Now I know why they don't feel as heavy as whole wheat! The best looking thing has to be those cookie dough balls. Man, they look good.

Fayinagirl (means Free One) said...

EVERYTHING you make looks SO good! I could never choose just one. =)

We do overnight soaked oats and even leave them on the counter to ferment a little. The kids love them.

Yours: protein bars and oaties.

Mine: I don't use oats much honestly. I go through phases where I will put them in cookies or granola (new post tonight), but I never have them like everyone else- in a bowl b/c they just simply don't fill me up :-(

Your site is pure food porn, honestly. I'm glad I ate dinner already :-)

theemptynutjar said...

Oh this post is perfect Averie. Really. Love oats. Cookies, oatmeal, with granola, in cookies ...yum stuff :)
I must try overnight oats soon...I hear a lot about the "breakfast" oatmeal cookie too...have a lovely nite!

Ameena said...

I love the raw chocolate chocolate chip cookies...they look amazing! I definitely want to try those.

I also wondered about the gluten-free oats but since I am intolerant and not allergic I have no trouble with regular oatmeal. The gluten-free is SO expensive!

Way too much oatmeal out in the blog world. :)

runwritetherapylife said...

Marry me, please?

I think your raw cookie daw balls look especially splendid, so I'll have to get on those this weekend.
I like using oats in whole grain sweet breads.

chrystad72 said...

Oats are my absolute favorite food. Love them so much. I think they are so versatile. Thats why I can eat them everyday and not get sick of it.

I gotta say it was so hard to pick just one item that looked good! I just couldnt! The Chocolate Peanut butter banana oats looked amazing, Banana Brulee oats and of course the PB chocolate chip protein bars looked fabulous as well. Just too many good things to pick from!

Good tip about the gluten and oats. Im not gluten sensitive at all so I dont pay attention to it too much. But its really interesting to learn about it though. Thanks!

I think my favorite way to eat oatmeal is just in a bowl with some vanilla stevia. Sweet and simple. I have come across tons of pics of oatmeal! Ha! But it has given me some good ideas too.

Have an awesome night love!

Katie said...

Yum yum! There is no such thing as too much of a good thing.

Have a lovely night, A!

sophia said...

Um, is there such a thing as TOO much oatmeal? Gosh, I love oats! But only in oatmeal form, sorry, haha. My favorite oatmeal: oats mixed with grits and oat bran, cooked in half milk half water, with vanilla and green tea powder. Topped with almond butter and chopped almonds! Mmmm~

Gabriela said...

Oats...favorite topic! I'm still dying to try the raw choc chip cookie dough balls. That being said, I like my oats the old fashioned way: as oatmeal, with lots of toppings :)

aletheia said...

Whoa that's alotta oats, girl!

Hmm, I'm not sure why, but I seem to be one of the only people in the world who DOESN'T like oats. Just was never a fan, to be honest. Crunchy oats or mushy oats. Nope. Just not for me. I guess I'm just more of a gluten person - if I'm going to eat grains you'll probably see me scarfing down a slice of bread. Oh yes, I love my breads! (Yes go ahead, GF folks, sue me, sue me NOW.)

Have you ever tried repeating the experiments with buckwheat groats? it could be cool. They're almost interchangeable, aren't they? oats and buckwheat? :)

Danielle (Coffee Run) said...

Thanks for adding me to your blog roll! :D

Which recipes looked good?! Um, ALL OF THEM- seriously if you put out a cookbook (or "uncook" book) I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
I see a lot of bowls of oatmeal in the blogworld lol. But hey...oatmeal is delicious and if that's what everyone likes to eat then good :)

Trail said...

It's kind of funny that you mentioned the "blogger trend" of all the oat recipes because I've definitely noticed some other trends too. Like several people all have the costco heat dish. Several people finish off their PB jars with an oats concoction. And of course the best one, balls aplenty! I thought it was funny, though, because pre-blogging I'd never even heard of overnight oats.

I think I like my oats in things better than as the star performer.

I'd love to try to protein bars, but the mango-oat-chia concoction really intrigued me too.

Andrea@WellnessNotes said...

I love oats and mainly eat them as oatmeal. In fact, I start almost every day with oatmeal... But I bookmarked this page and will be back to make some of your recipes!

Cindy said...

oh, i love oats. but I haven't had any in a while. I am actually trying to cut back on grains. oats included. it's a sugar thing.

I was for a while, a few months ago, grinding oats into flour for pancakes and other things. loved it!

I think...HANDS DOWN your apple crumble LOOKS (and tastes) the absolute best.

oats/apples/cinnamon=HEAVEN

I love your compilation of oaty goodness.

At the mo, I'm in love with the look of your peanut butter cups. I haven't tried them yet (not quite sure why...) but they look awesome. Ooo, fudge babies or whatever they're called and your coconut balls are regular eats for sure.

I used to eat oats all the time, but have since replaced with banana ice cream and smoothies- I always liked the warmth that they offer- but hate cleaning up after them! Mostly I use oats to make my homemade granola- and bars like you have here on this post.. The recently the peanut butter cookies that I made out of vegan with a vengeance had oats in them and they were amazing! Interesting gluten info! I had no idea about it "mixing" with the other grains- though I never researched it- but that's good to know :) Everything looks amazing as always- and I think they desserts are always fun to make... so any variation on those guys are cool with me :)

I agree- wish we could have a bloggy meet up for some coffee and yoga talk!!! We would totally be BFF Yogis! Have a great night :)

Oh that's WAY too hard Averie - If I HAD to choose, right now, I'd say the apple crisp is what I'm craving. I made the raw choco balls last week and OMG so good. I even gave a sample to this new Dude I'm dating and he gave it the two thumbs up (which means, good recipe, but also good guy for willingly eating things that I make without question!! :))

one of the most drool worthy posts out there!!! I never would have thought oatmeal could be created in so many different ways!! I mean i know it could be but i love all of these recipes, they are simple and DELICIOUS!!!

hahah I never think that I really do see about 25 bowls of oatmeal daily! including my own. Since having a blog, I think I have taken more pictures of oatmeal than anything else. I just love it so much I dont even care! and I love seeing other's creations!

for me, I like mostly oatmeal the traditional way, well sort of, by that I mean cooked in the micro then I add berries and PB at the end maybe some eggwhites. I am not a good baker so I rarely bake but when I do I use oatbran and its delicious it makes loaves and cookies nutty and delicious!

i would like to sample ALL OF YOUR OATS RECIPES!

Perfect timing. I was recently wondering your stance on oats re: gluten and meant to ask, but you beat me to it :). When I first decided to go gluten free I was pretty strict and bought the gf ones, but they were so expensive and regular oats never seemed to bother me anyway. I'm only about 70% gluten free now I'd estimate, so I feel the same as you and went back to my old tried and true.

BTW I made your chocolate snowballs. SO GOOD. Definitely another dessert to keep in rotation. I've had unsweetened shredded coconut sitting around half unused forever. All I have to say is....not for long!

tyrah. said...

the chia mango coconut soaked oats are DELICIOUS, everyone should try them!!! Averie, I posted on my blog about them http://domesticdharma.blogspot.com/2010/02/photobucket.html

You can find truly raw, sproutable oats from The Sprout House, btw. They really DO sprout, even though they are hulled.
