Tip and Q & A of the Day: Are Oats Gluten Free?
This is sort of a trick question. I'll explain.
Oats themselves are gluten-free. However, the issue that arises is that in the planting of oat crops, harvesting, milling, and transporting the oats, they are frequently cross-contaminated with wheat, rye, or barley which all are gluten-containing grains. So yes, oats are gluten-free inherently but they are surface-level contaminated with gluten, sometimes in large amounts, sometimes in trace amounts. For individuals with true Celiac Disease, gluten should be avoided at all costs.
For individuals like myself who are gluten-sensitive and gluten-intolerant, but it's not a matter of life-and-death, to each his or her own whether they choose to purchase specifically certified Gluten-Free Oats. My gluten intolerance is not sensitive enough that I need to do this and I am fine using conventional oats, but I also don't ever eat more than 1/3 cup per day or I will feel the effects systemically; but..
..."There are several companies who now sell "certified gluten-free oats," which are oats that are farmed, harvested, processed and packed using special methods to avoid cross-contamination with gluten during every step of the way. Gluten-free oats currently sell for around $4 to $5 a pound." (source)
If you feel that organic oats, Trader Joe's or WF's many varieties of oats, the bulk bins at your food co-op, or even Quaker Oats won't suffice and need a truly Gluten-Free option, check out Gluten Free Oats or Bob's Red Mill GF Oats.
So that was a long-winded answer but like I said, it's tricky and only your own personal detective work will tell you whether you need Certified GF Oats or not.

What recipe of mine looked good? If there's a pattern, I may take that recipe and tweak it somehow and make a "new and improved version".
What is Your Favorite Recipe Using Oats? If you have a great one you can drop the link in the comments!
Do you do overnight or soaked oats? Do you like bowls of oatmeal or do you prefer to use your oats IN things, like in cookies or protein bars? I'm the later, for sure. The oatmeal bowls go straight to Scott and I love my dough balls and cookies with oats in them!
Do you ever think that bloggers post tooo many bowls of oatmeal? haha! kidding, but I think on a daily basis I see about 25 bowls of oats on different blogs. Do you think bloggers post alot of oatmeal bowl, too? With almond or nut butter on top, but of course...haha!

Ahhh I could NEVER pick what looks the best. I am thinking the chocolate chip cookie balls...or the bars - those look incredible!
And I am with you...I see a heck of a lot of oatmeal!!!
Here's my question - how on earth do you get the chocolate chip cookie dough balls out of the vita-mix?
So I think for my "after dinner" snack, Ill make oatmeal.. thanks! :)
I really wanna make thos balls but I have a mini food processor and a magic bullet.. thats it. NO big mixer.. Im assuming it would be kinda hard?!?
Happy Tuesday, Averie :)
I loved the look of those vegan cookies- my mouth is watering and I'm about to goto yoga-- praying I don't think of them the whole time!
AVERIE!
haha you can NEVER have enough bowls of oatmeal! shoooot! girl all those oatmeal creations looked AWESOME. the oatmeal bars you made looked the best i think! loved it! and the tropical oats!! im bout to go look at all those links!
Fantastic oats! When we thought Lulu was gluten intolerant, our first big trigger food was oats. She'd vomit VIOLENTLY every time she ate them, so she and I both went GF for a year (the whole bfeeding thing), and I missed my oats SO much. They are so versatile. I really should try to incorporate oat flour into my baking more and see how it holds up.
Have a good night, sweetie. We are hanging in here.
Ooooooooh my goodness! what an amazing oats post! The mango-y oats look great to me! This morning I had PBJ oats which was pretty good too!
I am oh so guilty of posting oatmeal pictures! I love me some oatmeal though! Straight up oatmeal and oatmeal pancakes are my favorite way to eat my oats!
Yum yum and oh yea... YUM! I love all of the oat bowls. They all look so creamy and dreamy and are making me hungry! :)
Mmmmm...delicious!!! I could never pick a favorite!
I eat oatmeal twice aday, and if I eat it, I post it, so you're going to see it like it or not :-D
I like how you kept eating oats even going raw. That's an oat devotee.
Gah...EV.RE.THING. looks insanely good. Anything with sticky looking oats, nut butter and chocolate makes me drool. I also really need to get on the chia bandwagon. Next grocery store trip for sure.
Oh all those amazing things you can do with oats! I LOVE oats!! :)
Thanks!! :)
ahh all those look soo delicious!
I need to try the overnight chocolate oats and the raw cookie dough balls.
I was wondering what your favorite vanilla protien powder was though. I tried one this morning and honestly was super not digging the taste. Any suggestions?
-Katrina
These all look so incredible!
My favorite has got to be the chocolate chip cookie dough balls :)
Yum, I LOVE oats, oatmeal cookies, oats in bars, oatmeal, oat milk. I think my favorite is still plain oat meal, it's so comforting! I had no idea that oats are naturally gluten free. Now I know why they don't feel as heavy as whole wheat! The best looking thing has to be those cookie dough balls. Man, they look good.
EVERYTHING you make looks SO good! I could never choose just one. =)
We do overnight soaked oats and even leave them on the counter to ferment a little. The kids love them.
i love plain oats with all the fixings the best!
your brown sugar and cinnamon oats look yummy to me :)
I think that apple crumb recipe looks incredible! Definitely making that asap :)
Just had a couple more cookie dough balls. Deeelliiiccious.
<3 jess
xoxo
Can you believe I have still never had overnight oats? What the heck am I waiting for? Love all the yummy oats in this post!
reminds how i have to eat some oats more often! =D
AUGHHHHHH too delicious! glad i made you laugh! =D
i know, i wish we had got more instruction on yoga tho! very very minimal on that, nothing at all even! =(
=D i have half a mind to go make overnight oats!
Yours: protein bars and oaties.
Mine: I don't use oats much honestly. I go through phases where I will put them in cookies or granola (new post tonight), but I never have them like everyone else- in a bowl b/c they just simply don't fill me up :-(
Your site is pure food porn, honestly. I'm glad I ate dinner already :-)
Oh this post is perfect Averie. Really. Love oats. Cookies, oatmeal, with granola, in cookies ...yum stuff :)
I must try overnight oats soon...I hear a lot about the "breakfast" oatmeal cookie too...have a lovely nite!
I love the raw chocolate chocolate chip cookies...they look amazing! I definitely want to try those.
I also wondered about the gluten-free oats but since I am intolerant and not allergic I have no trouble with regular oatmeal. The gluten-free is SO expensive!
Way too much oatmeal out in the blog world. :)
Marry me, please?
I think your raw cookie daw balls look especially splendid, so I'll have to get on those this weekend.
I like using oats in whole grain sweet breads.
Oats are my absolute favorite food. Love them so much. I think they are so versatile. Thats why I can eat them everyday and not get sick of it.
I gotta say it was so hard to pick just one item that looked good! I just couldnt! The Chocolate Peanut butter banana oats looked amazing, Banana Brulee oats and of course the PB chocolate chip protein bars looked fabulous as well. Just too many good things to pick from!
Good tip about the gluten and oats. Im not gluten sensitive at all so I dont pay attention to it too much. But its really interesting to learn about it though. Thanks!
I think my favorite way to eat oatmeal is just in a bowl with some vanilla stevia. Sweet and simple. I have come across tons of pics of oatmeal! Ha! But it has given me some good ideas too.
Have an awesome night love!
Yum yum! There is no such thing as too much of a good thing.
Have a lovely night, A!
Um, is there such a thing as TOO much oatmeal? Gosh, I love oats! But only in oatmeal form, sorry, haha. My favorite oatmeal: oats mixed with grits and oat bran, cooked in half milk half water, with vanilla and green tea powder. Topped with almond butter and chopped almonds! Mmmm~
Oats...favorite topic! I'm still dying to try the raw choc chip cookie dough balls. That being said, I like my oats the old fashioned way: as oatmeal, with lots of toppings :)
Whoa that's alotta oats, girl!
Hmm, I'm not sure why, but I seem to be one of the only people in the world who DOESN'T like oats. Just was never a fan, to be honest. Crunchy oats or mushy oats. Nope. Just not for me. I guess I'm just more of a gluten person - if I'm going to eat grains you'll probably see me scarfing down a slice of bread. Oh yes, I love my breads! (Yes go ahead, GF folks, sue me, sue me NOW.)
Have you ever tried repeating the experiments with buckwheat groats? it could be cool. They're almost interchangeable, aren't they? oats and buckwheat? :)
Thanks for adding me to your blog roll! :D
Which recipes looked good?! Um, ALL OF THEM- seriously if you put out a cookbook (or "uncook" book) I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
I see a lot of bowls of oatmeal in the blogworld lol. But hey...oatmeal is delicious and if that's what everyone likes to eat then good :)
It's kind of funny that you mentioned the "blogger trend" of all the oat recipes because I've definitely noticed some other trends too. Like several people all have the costco heat dish. Several people finish off their PB jars with an oats concoction. And of course the best one, balls aplenty! I thought it was funny, though, because pre-blogging I'd never even heard of overnight oats.
I think I like my oats in things better than as the star performer.
I'd love to try to protein bars, but the mango-oat-chia concoction really intrigued me too.
I love oats and mainly eat them as oatmeal. In fact, I start almost every day with oatmeal... But I bookmarked this page and will be back to make some of your recipes!
oh, i love oats. but I haven't had any in a while. I am actually trying to cut back on grains. oats included. it's a sugar thing.
I was for a while, a few months ago, grinding oats into flour for pancakes and other things. loved it!
I think...HANDS DOWN your apple crumble LOOKS (and tastes) the absolute best.
oats/apples/cinnamon=HEAVEN
I love your compilation of oaty goodness.
oats galore! oh man, which of your recipes DIDN'T look good? answer: none! they all look delicious! banana brulee, oh boy!
WOW I never realize how many recipes you have until you line them up like this! You really should get a cookbook, lady!
I'm an oats in things girl all the way. Actually, my pantry is hankering for a fresh batch of trail mix bars as we speak!
I actually am NOT a huge fan of cooked oats, but I do really like Tina's new oatmeal baked 'cookie' recipe, and i like overnight oats!! These all look deeeeeeelish though!
www.justjac.wordpress.com
Thank you for the wonderful Oats post!! I always buy the gluten free oats as I just feel better knowing that they are ;)
Oats are interesting little things huh?
Love this post!
XXOO
I'm going to have to find celiac approved oats so that I can try all those yummy recipes!
At the mo, I'm in love with the look of your peanut butter cups. I haven't tried them yet (not quite sure why...) but they look awesome. Ooo, fudge babies or whatever they're called and your coconut balls are regular eats for sure.
Oops, above is Sarah from Gluten-free Tries Vegan. I signed in incorrectly! :)
I used to eat oats all the time, but have since replaced with banana ice cream and smoothies- I always liked the warmth that they offer- but hate cleaning up after them! Mostly I use oats to make my homemade granola- and bars like you have here on this post.. The recently the peanut butter cookies that I made out of vegan with a vengeance had oats in them and they were amazing! Interesting gluten info! I had no idea about it "mixing" with the other grains- though I never researched it- but that's good to know :) Everything looks amazing as always- and I think they desserts are always fun to make... so any variation on those guys are cool with me :)
I agree- wish we could have a bloggy meet up for some coffee and yoga talk!!! We would totally be BFF Yogis! Have a great night :)
What an awesome post!
Not sure what my favorite is, but I definitely want to try out your Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Protein Bars. Phew - what a mouthful! haha
Hmm..not sure if my last comment took lol.
What an awesome post!
I don't know that I could pick a fave, but I definitely want to try those Vegan PB Choc. chip Protein Bars. Phew - what a mouthful~
I think the coconut chia oat dessert or the chocolate brownie protein oats LOL! I can't decide!
Oooh this has to be one of my most favorite posts...a tribute to oats!! I LOVE it! I'd have to say any recipe with oats looks good to me, but those balls always catch my eye. :)
I'm so glad you answered that question about oats and gluten! I have always wondered about that very question. Great info!!
I know I'm constantly saying this anymore, but I'm sorry I've been MIA lately! I WILL get back to blogging soon enough.
XOXO
Great oat post! I have been looking for some homemade protein bars...will have to try yours!
if I had to choose, the Raw Vegan Apple Crumble is my favorite...but the oat granola bars are so yummie sounding, too. I like them both. Haven't tried them yet, though as the sugar is quite high. They are tempting. Oh, so tempting anyway!
you know how to mkae a girl hungry :) haha one day, skylar will realize she has the best mommy in the world! i think the raw balls look amazing.. i want to try them! and the bars :) i personally just make big bowls of oatmeal, mostly bc that is all i know how to make hahah
xoxo
shelley
To answer your question--so many of these recipes look amazing! But I would have to choose the pancakes and the cookie dough balls as the ones that look the best! But really, do they need to be improved upon?! ;)
Oh that's WAY too hard Averie - If I HAD to choose, right now, I'd say the apple crisp is what I'm craving. I made the raw choco balls last week and OMG so good. I even gave a sample to this new Dude I'm dating and he gave it the two thumbs up (which means, good recipe, but also good guy for willingly eating things that I make without question!! :))
Those coconut/mango oats looks tasty! I will have to try those when i see a ripe mango soon!
OMG!!! What recipe looked good, ummmm ALL OF THEM!!!
I love the apple crumble one, the chocolate oats too!!! I need to make one of these!!!!
I am so hungry now after seeing all these pics!lol!!
Oh girl I would love to share photo albums with you, I bet you had fun times!!!!!

Thanks for sharing the pb protein bar recipe! I must make those!
*Oat* so delicious! ;)
one of the most drool worthy posts out there!!! I never would have thought oatmeal could be created in so many different ways!! I mean i know it could be but i love all of these recipes, they are simple and DELICIOUS!!!
hahah I never think that I really do see about 25 bowls of oatmeal daily! including my own. Since having a blog, I think I have taken more pictures of oatmeal than anything else. I just love it so much I dont even care! and I love seeing other's creations!
for me, I like mostly oatmeal the traditional way, well sort of, by that I mean cooked in the micro then I add berries and PB at the end maybe some eggwhites. I am not a good baker so I rarely bake but when I do I use oatbran and its delicious it makes loaves and cookies nutty and delicious!
i would like to sample ALL OF YOUR OATS RECIPES!
oh sweets I LIVE ON OATS .. especially now that i'm at school. They're just full proof and the possibilities are endless. Normally I am all about stove top oats but time/utilities don't really avail me the opportunity to do that at school so overnight oats have been my savior!
thinking of you sweetheart <3 muah!
totally have some of the
Overnight Chia Seed-Coconut-Mango Soaked Oats in the fridge for breakfast in the morning! thanks for your awesome recipes...so many I want to try =) also, I don't think I ever get sick of bowls of oats...at least not yet ;) have a wonderful day!!!
oh my goodness... those recipes have me literally drooling... good thing I'm alone right now! Thank you for condensing into one cause now I can check each one off my list as I try them! I love your blog miss averie!
There are certainly a lot on oats on the Internet, that's for sure! I'm in love with oatmeal, but I try not to eat so much of one thing that I would ever get burned out.
Except kale chips. Those I make a TON of.
XOXO,
Erin
Perfect timing. I was recently wondering your stance on oats re: gluten and meant to ask, but you beat me to it :). When I first decided to go gluten free I was pretty strict and bought the gf ones, but they were so expensive and regular oats never seemed to bother me anyway. I'm only about 70% gluten free now I'd estimate, so I feel the same as you and went back to my old tried and true.
BTW I made your chocolate snowballs. SO GOOD. Definitely another dessert to keep in rotation. I've had unsweetened shredded coconut sitting around half unused forever. All I have to say is....not for long!
the chia mango coconut soaked oats are DELICIOUS, everyone should try them!!! Averie, I posted on my blog about them http://domesticdharma.blogspot.com/2010/02/photobucket.html
I've wondered about oats and gluten, good info to clear that up, thanks!
Absolutely the wrong post for me to read right now as I kick off a juice fast!!! YUM, I love almond butter balls.....ARGH!
Aaahhh obsessed with the oat loving.
And thank you for the clarification of the gluten-free oat debacle. I honestly was unaware that oats themselves have ZERO gluten! Good to know.
thanks for mentioning this post on my comments! it has been sitting in my reader (along with 300 other posts~ gah!) but when you mentioned and OATS post i had to come right away! look at all that amazing oaty goodness~ you are the mastermind. when i get back in town i plan to do more baking (and NON baking) for my vegan friends~ they have been giving me a hard time because i havent been making them treats lately. i think ive said before 1st on the list is your CHEESECAKE and then some balls. i will miss you while i am gone and i hope to have crazy adventures like you! LOVE YOU!
yum...I like the apple one the best...Averie, I have a question!!!! Where are the recipies for all these wonderful goodies. I clicked on the picture hoping they would come up, but only the picture did. Thank you so much for this blog btw. You are truly an inspiration for anyone. You can find truly raw, sproutable oats from The Sprout House, btw. They really DO sprout, even though they are hulled.
xox
Oatmeal is so divine! I want to make your GF pancakes though! Or the PB protein-granola bars!
Over Shabbat I actually decided to give overnight oats a try...I based it off of your protein brownie oats but I have no protein powder so I just mashed a banana up with nut butter, added some oats and a splash of almond milk and let it sit overnight. Yeah, it's amazing. I made it again for tomorrow but I might eat it tonight.
I haven't had Butterfinger in sooooo long - maybe that's why this looks so amazing! The... Butterfinger & Banana Oats :)
I think I'd most like to try the pancakes. YUM! :-D
Totally want to have a go at your Protein Bars. Tried the pancakes and the texture just was not for me. I'm not a fan of mashed over-ripe bananas.
I can't wait to try High Raw Vegan Chocolate-Coconut-Chia-Oat Dessert/Energy Bars. I have more chia seeds than I know what to do with, so it's perfect!
The Apple Crumble looks incredible!
the fact that it's no-bake is great!! (no oven here in the dorms lol)
The Raw VeganChocolateChocolate-Chip Cookies sound great!
I need to try the Chocolate Brownie Protein Oats, sounds great!
I absolutely adore overnight chia oats! I've made some similar before and they are so good! Next week for breakfast I'll be enjoying them again :)
http://thevegster.wordpress.com/2010/03/23/grawnola-and-overnight-oiaj/

=)
I'd love to make your chocolate-chocolate chip cookies!
I want to make your Vegan GF pancakes!
Raw oatmeal raisin cookies! That's next on my list.
So many good recipes on this page! I want to try the chocolate banana protein oats, gluten free pancakes, and PB Chocolate Chip Protein Bars.
I sooo want to make the apple crumble and the bars, but I just don't know if I can get a nice flavour with buckwheat flakes. Well, I'll only know if I try!
I would love to try that recipe for teh Raw Vegan Chocolate Chocolate-Chip Cookies
I made your Vegan PB Chocolate Chip Coconut Oil Protein Bars-- Yum! I didn't blog about it though, I ate them too quickly (okay, I had help ;). I would LOVE to try the Chocolate chip cookie dough balls... drool... I just need a blender or food processor!
