Vanilla Avocado Banana Smoothie in a Bowl

by Averie @ Averie Cooks on May 4, 2011

I had one last locally grown avocado to use up.

Rather than making more “Cheater’s” Guacamole

…I went for an Vanilla Avocado Banana Smoothie in a Bowl

It may not be pretty food, but it sure tasted pretty!

Enjoy straight from the Vita-Mix…

Or pour directly into a in a very classy trough plastic bowl and find two straws or two spoons.

This was a very thick smoothie.  The only way I really like them.

What you don’t consume immediately, put it in the freezer where it will turn into Vanilla Avocado Banana “Ice Cream”.

That’s what I do with my Raw Vegan Chocolate Mousse made with avocados.  Freeze it for a decadent dessert.  So good.

Skylar loved it and so did I!

She was literally running around the house giggling, laughing, and just especially joyous after she drank this.  Or, I should say ate this because it was so nice and thick.

It was so creamy! Just wonderful!  And it was sweet but not too sweet and full of healthy fat.

Miss Giggle Pants herself.   And who said kids won’t eat green food?

She was even helping me name the recipe.  And she knows, pictures first, eating second. Child of a food blogger.

Another reason I went for a smoothie was because it’s hot here!  Low 90s and sunny.  Love cold drinks on hot days.

Holy hot snap out of no where!

You need a smoothie to cool you down in this weather!

Thanks for filling me in on whether or not you’re a salt lover from my last post.  Lots of you said, no, you’re not into salt.  I always feel strange when I say I don’t like garlic, onions, or salt.  Glad to know I’m not alone on the salt front.

And interesting to hear what foods you just “can’t do”.  Everyone’s yays and nays are so different!

Questions:

1. Do you like smoothies?

I admit, I’m not much of a smoothie drinker.  They tend to fill me up on liquid and I just feel The Liquid Bloat in my belly for an hour or so, and then, I am hungry again.  This smoothie kept me full for longer than usual and it was just so creamy that I really loved it.   Fat is a beautiful thing for that.  And plant-based fat in avos is no exception.

Skylar begs me to make her Chocolate Coconut Princess Smoothies.  Or any kind of smoothie, so I oblige.

Princess cup not entirely necessary, but preferred.

2. What’s your fave smoothie recipe or must have ingredients?

I know you all are some smoothie lovin’ people so can’t wait to hear these!

3. How’s your week going so far?

I have been extremely busy with life, work, my blog and blog related emails, photography and photos to edit and upload, recipes to type, housework, cooking, and errands to do.

But I did get in a few great runs and 20 minute at-home yoga sessions the past few days despite being super busy!

Just have to enjoy this weather!

How’s your day and week going?

I love smoothies, but specially fruity ones (like strawberries, banana and kiwi). They make a good snack in the afternoon, otherwise I’m too hungry by dinnertime.
Just like you I’m having a busy week! My mastersthesis needs to be done in 2 weeks, so I’m writing, re-reading, writing, etc… ;)

1.) I have the same take on smoothies.

2.) berries, protein powder, nut butter.

3.) So quickly!! But very good :)

This looks so good :] What do you mean, not pretty food? That is a gorgeous shade of green ;)
I’m usually the same way about smoothies. They give me that uncomfortably full feeling and then poof! But having a small one for dessert is a-okay :) Must-have ingredient for one is banana! Although the couple I’ve had with avos have been outstanding – love the “moussey” texture they give.

I am a smoothie lover. I tend to make them nice and thick and eat in a bowl with nut, dried fruit, and chocolate type toppings. Must haves for me are a bunch of greens (kale, spinach, chard), strawberries, and usually a scoop of hemp or pea protein. I’ve used an avocado before and it makes it super thick and creamy.

As usual Skylar is a doll! Cutest smile ever!!!

1. I definitely prefer to chew my food, so even though I like the taste of smoothies I’m not really into them. I’d rather eat all those yummy fruits and veggies, than drink them.

2. I’m honestly not sure because I never make them (see answer to #1).

3. My week is going fairly well so far – it’s my last week of class and clinical rotations before I graduate with my master’s! Super exciting time :)

Hey hey :) This looks and sounds awesome. I love how versatile avocado can be!! And even more awesome is that your peanut likes it too! I am a huge smoothie fan- some of my favorite ingredients are almond milk, bananas, berries, spinach, protein powder & cocoa powder. Week has been a little hectic and stressful. Luckily, we have a pretty awesome weekend planned- I just need to get there!

I love smoothies — and I’ve added chunks of avocado to smoothies before but it was never a star ingredient. It has such a great texture.

My favorite smoothie is 1 cup almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla protein, 1 TBSP chia seeds, 1 TBSP PB, 1/2 banana, 5 ice cubes. I have that for breakfast almost every day.

My week is going pretty good — we are dog sitting so our house is kind of crazy, but in a good way.

I love smoothies and have them pretty often!

I usually stuff some sort of greens (whatever I have on hand!), a banana, protein powder, and sometimes frozen fruit.

Your smoothie today looked delicious! Do you normally put ice in your smoothies! I find that a lot of times I don’t, but when I do it just makes it taste so much better!

Sometimes I really like smoothies, but in general I’d rather chew my food. When I do make smoothies, I love bananas and mangoes and greens. Sometimes I’ll just make a chocolate banana smoothie with a frozen nanna, cocoa powder and enough coconut or almond milk to get everything moving. it’s my ice cream shake replacement these days.

Love smoothies. Oh my goodness. I haven’t had one in such a long time I need to get experimenting again. I went through a phase where I had one every morning and I just threw anything and everything in the blender, usually including way too much greens. And then I’d choke it down because I can’t waste nutritious food like that. I’m a lot more careful in my experimentation now.
I’m feeling totally overwhelmed with blog stuff. I have to change the link to every single one of my pictures so it doesn’t link to the pictures uploaded on wordpress?? Oh well, it’s necessary and I wanted it. I find the worst part for myself is getting motivated to just go at it. Once I do it doesn’t actually take that long or seem that bad. It just sucks having work pile up when you have so many other things to get done too :( Like I said though, I wanted it. Haha

I’m more into the spoonable smoothies too. I rarely use a straw or drink them. I have started calling them pudding, actually.

Reply

28 Beth May 4, 2011 at 8:15 am

Sounds like one thick smoothie. Much deserving a bowl and a couple spoons.

I LOVE smoothies. Eat/drink them daily for breakfast. When I’m at the paintball field I bring an extra smoothie with me as I usually don’t have time to sit down and eat something. Also very refreshing on a warm day.

Favourite smoothie ingredients (but not all in 1 smoothie): mango, mint, banana, cilantro, spinach, pineapple.
Great recipe: banana, handful spinach, fresh mint (or mint extract in a pinch), spoon of cocoa powder, and water to blend. Tastes like a chocolate shake. Yum!

My favourite smoothie is from a vegan cookbook by Sarah Kramer. I think it was from “La Dolce Vegan” but it might have been from one of her other ones (The Garden of Vegan, How it all Vegan) because I don’t remember! But it goes like this: 2 frozen bananas, 2 tsp cocoa powder, 2 tsp maple syrup, 1 tsp ground coffee, and some almond milk (I use vanilla). It is so delicious!! I’ve made it without the coffee before and it was just as yummy.

I super love smoothies! i also super love avocados!! I’ve put avocados in my smoothies before and it’s amazing! In the philippines, we eat avocados for dessert, not as savory. Only when I got to the US that i learned about savory avocados! So i’m so used to eating this wonderful thing as sweets!

I love smoothies, but they have to be really thick for me too- or topped with something else so there’s more to them than liquid! I had a great one this morning with spinach, banana, Sun Warrior and almond milk, topped with cereal. Perfection. I love how thick yours is, and the color is gorgeous as well- it reminds me of my room at my parents’ house!!

It was 91* here yesterday and B & I enjoyed smoothies for breakfast and salad for lunch. I just couldn’t ‘do’ anything hot. I made us a blackberry vanilla smoothie w. spinach. It was just ok. I had frozen some fresh blackberries from TJ’s and apparently they weren’t all the way ripe. A little yuck, but we drank them. My smoothies always include some kind of fruit, almond milk & chia seeds, but depending on when I’m drinking it…. the other ingredients vary. Sometimes I like to add spinach, prot powder, peanut flour, cocoa, various extracts… I love it all.

I eat (thick enough to eat!) at least one smoothie per day. The essentials are bananas and berries. The other things change. Sometimes spinach is included, sometimes yogurt, sometimes avocado, sometimes protein powder and/or cocoa powder, it all depends on the day!

oh boy that looks amazing and refreshing! Avocados are one of my top 5 favorite foods but would you believe I’ve never put them in a smoothie! Honestly I love the taste of them so much that I haven’t wanted to “waste” them getting lost in a smoothie. But this post has definitely convinced me to give it a whirl, literally. I have been on a dough boy smoothie (kath’s recipe) kick, which I highly highly recommend. Overnight oats and add some more milk and sometimes other fruit in the morning and it is so thick. Smoothies with a spoon and toppings are both musts.

hey averie!

yum! what a great way to use up an avocado. you’re giving me a great suggestion! ;-)

smoothies: i have them a few times a week and am really enjoying them vegan:

- bananas
- frozen berries
- VEGA powder
- kale or spinach
- maca powder
- ground chia or flax seeds
- psyllium husk
- water

sometimes, i add peanut powder or carob powder. i used to add orange juice, but found it overpowered the flavor of the smoothie. i sometimes add yogurt, but, i’m actually more of a fan of the vegan version i posted above (dear husband likes yogurt, so i compromise). :-)

My fav at the moment is also with 1 frozen banana, a handful of spinach, 1 avocado, almond milk (raw homemade), vanilla, chia seeds, spoonful of coconut butter, agave. If I have blueberries I throw those in too! Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to try your version!

The smoothie sounds great, very creative! Lovely weather, it’s hot here too, and dry!

1. Yes, I usually have one for breakfast every morning with some sort of vegan protein powder. Not the most exciting breakfast, but fast and nutrient dense on week mornings.
2. I usually add protein powder, kale or spinach, carrots, some fruit and seeds.
3. Busy, gah! Still too much going on at work.

Hey there,

One snack I am loving at the moment are these delicious walnut carrot cookies I found on the Whole Foods Market website. They are completely dairy-free and have zero refined sugars, no oils or liquid syrups, in fact they are very healthy considering they are called “cookies”. The little sweetness that’s in them comes from the fruit in them and the ingredient list couldn’t be simpler:
1 cup raw unsalted walnuts
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 carrots, grated
1 apple, grated
1 very ripe banana, peeled and mashed
1/4 cup apple juice

They aren’t too sweet so they make a great breakfast cookie if you’re into grab and go breakfasts :)

I am a distributor for them and sadly the lowest price is around $400 however a couple times a year they run refurbished specials, i.e. $275ish. Not sure if it’s worth it to you to wait for those and get a refurbed machine but we can talk…seriously, you need one!!!

I love the classic smoothies, I’ll throw in greek yogurt, ground flax, spinach, frozen berries, banana, milk, oj, etc; but lately I’ve been paranoid about baby spinach and e. coli/salmonella/any creepy bacteria so unfortunately I’m not getting the amount of greens I would like to.
